MFG Workforce and Students

Students

Manufacturers need to hire 4.1M workers within 8 years. There are now 851,000 MFG jobs open

The Problem

The Solution

Increasing awareness and changing misperceptions of manufacturing among the emerging and existing workforce (including reskilling and upskilling), veterans and transitioning servicemembers, women, and students.

Student engagement requires outreach to youth, parents, and teachers, by collaborating with schools, communities, and your manufacturing community to create compelling content & experiences.

Workforce Development – Filling the Talent Gap – Apprenticeship Trends

Employers are expanding the use of Apprenticeships to meet their workforce needs

  • Developing their own apprenticeship programs within their companies.

  • Utilizing educational partners that have apprenticeship programs and enrolling both new hires and incumbent workers in those programs for training.

  • Partnering with training companies that have embedded apprenticeship programs in their training, to not only provide training but to find the candidates they need and to train them.

  • Employers are recruiting individuals with “relevant skills” and providing them with the training needed for their career pathways and recruiting from all industries and hiring more diverse candidates.

Community Organizations

Workforce Training Programs – Job Skills Training Programs

  • Santa Maria Community Services: Partners with employers for internship opportunities for individuals 16-24. The organization will pay the salary of the intern during the 12-week internship. Will assist with transportation needs.

  • Logistics Inventory Management, Facilities & Transportation Program: Participants earn the Certified Logistics Associate Certificate upon completion of the 10-week program.

Employer Participation Needed

Fort Campbell – Kentucky

  • Over 400 military service men and women transition out of Fort Campbell monthly.

National Association of Manufacturers’ (NAM) Heroes Make America Program has an advanced manufacturing training program in Mechatronics – graduates earn an MSSC industry recognized credential - Other bases, Fort Riley (Kansas), Fort Bragg (North Carolina) Fort Hood (Texas). The program needs virtual speakers to discuss manufacturing career pathways and job opportunities (apprenticeship programs) at information briefings for transitioning out soldiers.

  • Internship Program

The Army offers military men and women the opportunity for an internship that provides a high probability of employment in high demand and highly skills jobs. Participation must occur within the last 180 days of military service. The army pays the salary of the individual during the internship.

Educator Feedback

  • I learned a lot and got to see all facets of the company. I really liked how we got to be so hands on. –Educator at Forward Technologies
  • Wonderful experience. I would do it again! –Educator at Phillips Tube Group
  • I really enjoyed the experience. I learned a lot about the industry and the importance of what they do. It was cool seeing Butler Tech students working for the company. – Educator at Rhinestahl
  • I got an overview of several plants and the corporate office at Worthington. Their culture is excellent. They clearly put people first and it showed in their vision as well as at each of the locations I visited. I like that they look for talent within their company and provide opportunities for growth and advancement. – Educator at Worthington
  • I had an amazing week. The world of manufacturing was completely new to me - and then adding pharma on top of that - it was a very educational experience. It was fantastic to meet with leaders from all departments throughout their company, including the top leaders. The idea that they would take the time to spend with us was humbling. I am hoping that we can set up a mutually beneficial arrangement with my students and Astra Zeneca. That is my "next step"! – Educator at AstraZeneca

THERE WILL BE A MEETING FOR COMPANIES INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN 2022-23 THIS FALL!

Contact Megan Reed, reedm@butlertech.org to make sure you get information about this meeting.
