Mia Hamm's Early Years
Mariel Margaret Hamm, also known as Mia, was born in Selma, Alabama on March 17, 1972 to William and Stephanie Hamm. She was born with a Club Foot of both feet which is a disease that makes a foot locked in a fixed position. Because of this she had to wear casts on both feet when she was a baby.
Mia Hamm As A Child
After her casts came off, her dad joined the Air Force, so she had to move around a lot. When they moved to Italy, Mia learned how to play soccer. When her family moved to Texas, Mia started to play soccer at the age of 5. When the girl turned 14, she was destroying the other teams.
Mia's Early Sports
Mia's mother started her out with ballet but Mia hated it. So that's when she started playing soccer!
Mia played other sports like baseball and golf, but she didn't like them as much as soccer.
Mia Hamm Early Soccer Life
When Mia was 15 she became the youngest U.S. Womens Soccer player ever. She started playing on a team for Texas. Then she played for UNC. Mia had learned a lot from her soccer coach Dorrance.

Mia plays for USA
Mia Hamm has always dreamed of playing for USA and one day a scout came to her practice and asked her to play for USA! Shocked Mia decided to join and that's how her career began.

USA plays for the Olympics
Shortly after Mia joined team USA, they played in the world olympics. They played for the USA and Mia won at least 2 gold medals!
Mia's World Cup and Foundation
In the year 1991 Mia Hamm, Julie Foudie (Mia''s friend who played for USA too), and USA had made it to the finals in the Women's World Cup. If they won this game the would have won the World Cup. The other team was Norway and they were very good. They won though 2-1! They video you see next to this is many of Mia Hamm's goals in World Cups. Mia Hamm started her foundation with the money they have won.
Mia's Charity
Mia Hamm has founded a charity called the Mia Hamm Foundation. She had founded this charity after her brother had died of a bone marrow disease. Today Mia Hamm Foundation has saved many lives.
