Aim

  • The aim of the program is to reconsider the tourism activities in Turkey and Worldwide in line with the global trends within the perspective of sustainability.

  • With this perspective, the program aims to contribute to the development of the necessary human resources needed for the development of sustainable tourism in Turkey and Worldwide.

  • Includes students who have completed their undergraduate education both in tourism and other fields.
  • Among our students who come from outside tourism education, undergraduate degrees include fields such as management, urban planning, translation, philosophy, and engineering.
  • Some students work in public institutions or NGOs and also actively participate in this program.

Application and Admissions

  • Students are admitted both in the fall and in the spring.
  • Language of instruction is English

In addition to Boğaziçi University general requirements:

  • Original documents received within the last two years for ALES (minimum 65 in EA grading) or GMAT (minimum 500) or GRE (minimum 152 quantitative)
  • Original documents of results for an English proficiency exam that is accepted by Boğaziçi University (B.U. Proficiency, TOEFL or IELTS)
  • Minimum of 2.5/4.00 (70/100) General Point Average – GPA.
  • Letter of Intent (in English and maximum 1000 words)
  • CV (curriculum vitae written in English)
  • 2 reference letters

  • Candidates who meet the application requirements and deliver all the documents are admitted to the science exam given by the Department. Candidates who succeed by taking 60 points or more out of 100 in the science exam are interviewed on the dates determined by the Department. Candidates are ranked according to ALES / GMAT / GRE, GNO, science exam and interview results.

Projects

  • We are members of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Knowledge Network and we participate in its activities within this framework.
  • We carry out projects in the field of sustainable tourism within the framework of our mutual agreements with foreign universities.
  • We have conducted local development and planning studies in conjunction with regional development agencies in Turkey
  • We are part of the Scientific Committee of the cultural route “From Italy to Turkey by Foot”, in cooperation with the Cultural Routes Society

Project Examples

  • Our department signed an agreement to participate in the Planet Happiness international project in 2018. Within the framework of the collaboration, we are implementing comparable surveys on community wellbeing in World Heritage Sites
  • We have worked with development agencies in Thrace and Cappadocia to develop sustainable tourism in these regions. Students have participated as well.
  • Together with San Diego State University, our department has twice completed projects on the "Effects of Sustainable Tourism on the Quality of Life in Kastamonu". Students from the USA and our Department participated in the project.

Graduates

  • In 2015 the first students graduated from the program
  • Graduates can both have an academic career and work in different areas of the tourism industry.
  • Potential working areas:
    • institutions that adopt plans and policies related to public tourism
    • tourism companies that adopt sustainability practices in the private sector
    • institutions working on the certification of tourism businesses
    • non-governmental organizations supporting sustainable tourism.
