Data Literacy

“the ability to understand and use data effectively to inform decisions … knowing how to identify, collect, organize, analyze, summarize, and prioritize data … how to develop hypotheses, identify problems, interpret the data, and determine, plan, implement, and monitor courses of action.”

Mandinach & Gummer 2013, p. 30

As use of data expands into additional disciplines, what can librarians and data providers do to better support students needs in working with data?

How can we make sense of those needs and integrate them into existing knowledge about how students research and where they struggle?

Collection: Metadata Critical

  1. Students are excited because searches have been narrowed down to relevant data
  2. Data providers must make certain the data are easily obtained (variety of formats, online analysis/interactive graphics)
  3. Data must be fully documented and documentation should accompany any downloads to avoid later confusion
  4. Librarians and providers should encourage citation as with all other sources
