Conjunction: A conjunction is a word that joins together words, phrases, or parts of sentences.

Formal conjunction: A conjunction used at the beginning of a sentence followed by a comma that links sentences together, creates cohesion and provides a formal tone.

What is a conjunction?

A conjunction links two words, phrases or clauses together.
Coordinating conjunction links two main clauses (but, or, and)
Subordinating conjunction joins a main clause and a subordinate clause (as, when, so, because + many more!)

‘And’ conjunctions Provides additional or complementary information to the previous sentence.

The reason we call them ‘and’ conjunctions is they behave in a similar way to the word ‘and’. They add more information to the previous info given just like the word ‘and’ does. Some examples of and conjunctions are: In addition, …..Furthermore, …..Also, ……

But conjunctions provides information that contrasts form the previous information given. We saw this when we did the ‘because , but, so’ activity in a previous lesson. The word ‘but’ joins information that is contrasting- meaning its differs from each other. This might be a sentence with a positive piece of info, followed by a sentence with a neg piece of information or they could join them the other way around- something with neg info followed by positive information. Or they might join information that has opposing facts.

Causal conjunctions tell us that something has happened because of something else, or b/c something is the way it is because of something else. Here are some examples: As a result, …Therefore, ….Consequently, ….

These explain that something has happened or something is the way it is because of what has happened previously.

Burning fossil fuels is the number one source of greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, if we do not stop using fossil fuels global warming will progress rapidly and the earth will become uninhabitable.

We do not have to use fossil fuels, there are many excellent energy alternatives such as wind, solar and hydro electricity. In addition, these alternative energy sources do not contribute to global warming and create cheap and reliable energy.

Renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and hydro power can be expensive initially to set up. Despite this, once they are set up they are a highly effective low cost way to create renewable energy.

Topic: Australia must stop using non-renewable energy because it contributes to global warming.

Australia must find ways to stop using non-renewable energy sources as burning of fossil fuels is the biggest contributor to global warming.

In addition, we must increase our usage of clean renewable energy sources. How is Australia, a developed nation, only using 24% of renewable energy sources when there are so many better options available to us? Australia has the largest carbon footprint in the world per capita with 18.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide being created per person, per year. Despite this, we seem to be doing the least out of any developed country to help the situation.

If we do not stop using non-renewable resources soon it will be too late. Consequently, our planet will become an oven that will be uninhabitable to any living creature.
