Acceleration at Waters

Ensure all students grow over school year

Prepare Middle School students for success in High School

4 of 12

Depth of Knowledge

Level 1 - Recall, Knowing Stuff, Labeling

Level 2 - Execute Procedures, Summarize, Identify Patterns

Level 3 - Use Evidence, Argue, Synthesize Sources

Level 4 - Create, Design

5 of 12

Common Core Standard (3rd Grade)

Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations.

6 of 12

Depth of Knowledge

Level 1 - Recall that multiplication and division are inverse operations.

Level 2 - Solve a Multiple Choice Question

Level 3 - Prove with evidence that 3*5 =15 can be used to solve 15/3

Level 4 - Create a board game using multiplication and division within 100.

Three “Legs” of Math Rigor

Acceleration Focus:

Conceptual Understanding

&

Application

(already well- developed fluency)

9 of 12

Example: Grade 7

Proof of Vertical Angles Theorem:

  • ∠2 + ∠1 = 180
  • ∠1 + ∠4 = 180
  • ∠2 +∠1 =∠1 +∠4
  • Subtract ∠1 from each side
  • ∠2 = ∠4

If students understand the why, they’ll figure out the what

10 of 12

Example: Grade 8 (Algebra)

Maria had $10,000 to invest. She decided to invest her money in bonds and mutual funds.

She invested a portion of the money in bonds (b) paying 4% interest per year and the remainder in a stock mutual fund (m) paying 6% per year.

After one year the total income she had earned from both investments was $550. How much had she invested in each type of investment?

11 of 12

Example: Grade 8 (Algebra)

Do you think Maria has more of her money in bonds or mutual funds?

How do you know?

Is there one equation you could write to figure out how much she invested in each type of investment?

Could you write two equations to figure it out? If so, how could you figure out the values for b and m with your two equations?

12 of 12

Example: Grade 8 (Algebra)

One Strategy: Create Two Equations and Solve them Together

b + m = 10,000

.04b + .06m = 550

Use elimination to solve the system of equations (multiply equation 2 by 25, then subtract to isolate m):

m = $7,500

b = $2,500
