Thank you for being here!

Before we begin, as we gather today from around the state of Vermont as educators who contribute to the inspiration of children and students in this world, it’s important that we acknowledge that this event is taking place on traditional Abenaki land. We recognize the oppression of Native peoples. We also honor the histories of BIPOC people and acknowledge both the painful history of enslavement and that this country was built on the backs of Black and Brown people. We honor with deep gratitude this land and all it gives us and we recognize that we must do better. We encourage you to visit the links on our website that can connect you to Abenake culture and history, and to our state Team's commitment to equity.

Before we begin, we want to honor the legacy of Vermont’s Indigenous people, particularly the Wabenaki People of the Dawn land confederacy, who have cared for this land for generations and continue to do so. We recognize that colonialism and the oppression of Native peoples are a current and ongoing process, and we commit to building our awareness of our present participation. We pay our respects to the elders past and present. We honor with deep gratitude this land and all it gives us.

We also honor the histories of BIPOC people and acknowledge both the painful history of enslavement and that this country was built on the backs of Black and Brown people.

In the words of Chief Don Stevens of the Nulhegan tribe, please learn more about Abenaki culture and history, support the Abenaki people, stay engaged, be kind and caring to and accepting of the Abenaki people, and honor the fact that they have always had, and continue to have, a lot to offer.
