IATI Organisation File

2 of 12

What is the ‘Organisation File’?

  • The IATI “organisation file” contains the high-level strategic data of an organisation.
  • The most common data contained within the organisation file relates to the past, present and future budget of the publisher. It often also contains likes to strategic documents / useful websites.

  • The organisation file does not contain information about individual activities, such as specific in-country interventions, as that data is contained in separate ‘activity files’.

How do I use it?

  • Despite the data being available on the IATI Registry, there is no user-friendly platform to access the data. This is not a flaw with the Standard or the publishers, but an issue with the currently available tools for data users.
  • You can, however, access the data in its raw xml…

How do I read IATI XML?

  • The raw XML isn’t the easiest to read but is simpler than it looks once you spot how it works.
  • <total-budget usg:type="Request">
  • <period-start iso-date="2016-10-01"/>
  • <period-end iso-date="2017-09-30"/>
  • <value value-date="2016-10-01">33911432000.00</value>
  • The text in black is usually what you’re after.
  • The above just means it refers to the “total budget”, it is a “request”, that the start date is “1 October 2016”, an end date of “30 September 2017” and the total value is 33,911,432,000.00.

How do I read IATI XML?

  • For us ‘non-techies’, the easiest way to search XML is to just use CTRL and F. Press both at the same time

And it will open up this box.

Nested under total budget are sector budgets. For example, here you can see that for FY17 the budget for Civil Society was $3,000,000 etc
