Scotland’s Curriculum: The Curriculum for Excellence

5 of 15

Curriculum and context

  • Every school does something different, because every school is different
  • They have different demographics, different cultures, different facilities, and different teachers with different subject specialisms
  • Schools will often work together to learn with and from each other, but we are never expected to deliver the same curriculum
  • Pinkie’s curriculum will be different to Wallyford’s, and Rosehill’s will be different to Musselburgh’s; everyone does what they think is right for their young people, within the resources they have
  • Each school is required to produce a curriculum rationale, explaining their thinking; ours are going up on the website later this week

Curriculum for Excellence Levels

  • Education Scotland have set out levels of achievement and indicated when they would expect young people to be working at each level
  • Most young people would be expected to have achieved Third Level by the end of S3, but this will be earlier or later for some
  • Data is gathered and analysed from Literacy and Numeracy, but all curricular areas report against levels achieved e.g. Expressive Arts, Technologies
  • You can find out more about levels of achievement here: https://education.gov.scot/parentzone/curriculum-in-scotland/curriculum-levels/
  • However, the subjects studies in classes is only one part of the curriculum, as you will see in the next slide

Links to senior phase

  • All young people study and make progress in all curricular areas until the end of S3
  • There is no ‘subject choice’ by exclusion, which reflects what Education Scotland considers to be best practice. You can read more here: https://education.gov.scot/news/hm-inspectors-publish-thematic-inspection-report-on-curriculum-design/
  • This strong foundation allows them flexibility in the senior phase and ensures that they are not cutting off pathways too early
  • Young people do a true senior phase S4-S6, choosing from National Qualifications, National Progression Awards, and other appropriate certificated course- but more on that at the senior phase evening!
