Today’s Goals of Discussion/Engagement

Investigating various cams, gathering data, and creating graphs.

Create a motion graph for a custom cam, create a CAD model/drawing of a custom cam, and create a physical model of a custom cam.

Discuss a “first draft” Automata or use the rough prototype to test your custom cam.

Create an Automata Teaching Model that helps explain various cams and also shows the mechanics of an Automata.

Remove the front panel of the Automata Box.

17 of 57

Check the clearance of all Follower Rods and Rod Guides. Your Follower Rods should fall freely through the Rod Guides. THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP!

18 of 57

Add glue to the outside of the Rod Guide (see blue highlighted area below) and snap the Rod Guide into the top panel of the Automata Box. Wipe off any excess glue on the top panel.

Hint: When adjusting your Rod Guides, the Follower Rod makes a great wrench to get the Rod Guide into the correct orientation.

21 of 57

Glue the Shaft Collar to the end of the Axle. Keep the Shaft Collar perpendicular to the Axle when you glue it in place. Be sure to wipe off excess glue from the Axle and Shaft Collar and allow it to dry before proceeding to the next step.

GLUE THE END OF THE AXLE AND INSERT IT INTO THE SHAFT COLLAR

22 of 57

Verify that the glue is dry and that the Shaft Collar is perpendicular to the Axle and slide the Axle subassembly into the Automata Box. Slide all Cams into place while you are doing this step.

23 of 57

The Shaft Collar/Axle subassembly should spin independently from the Automata Box. DO NOT GLUE THE AXLE/SHAFT COLLAR SUBASSEMBLY DIRECTLY TO THE AUTOMATA BOX.

24 of 57

Snail Cams are unidirectional. The orientation of the Snail Cam will have an impact on the direction that you crank the Crank Handle after it is installed. There is no wrong way on the orientation. This is the designer/user’s preference.

Insert all Follower Rods through Rod Guides, add glue (Hot Glue) into the bottom of the holes in the Followers, and insert the Follower Rods.

NOTE: FOLLOWERS SHOWN WILL LOOK DIFFERENT THAN THE ONES THAT CAME WITH YOUR KIT. HOWEVER, THE FOLLOWERS WILL WORK THE SAME.

GLUE THE FOLLOWER RODS INTO THE FOLLOWERS

31 of 57

Slightly rotate your Followers (5 degrees or so) when gluing (Hot Glue) in the Follower Rod to ALL Followers. This adjustment should help keep the Follower Rod and Cam from binding. Be sure to make this adjustment according to the direction that your Crank Handle spins.
