Day Camp�Dates, Location, & Times

  • Dates: June 2-6
  • Location: NSS Park
  • Opening Assembly: 8:00 AM (Back of Stage)
  • Closing Assembly: 2:30 PM (Back of Stage)

Please try to be there by 7:50AM for check-in and be ready for pickup by 2:45PM

Day Camp Program

The program is centered around rank advancement and achievements, with rotation through six to eight about half hour sessions.

Sessions include: archery, BB gun shooting, slingshots, crafts, waterslide, obstacle course, and special topics.

Adventures earned will be provided at the end of camp for you to register with your Cubmaster, or in Scoutbook directly.

Day Camp Attendance

Walking Den Leaders will take “roll call” each morning at the Assembly Field. It is imperative that you check your child in and review your contact information.

The Camp Director or designee will contact the parent/guardian to verify any absences.

Late arrivals or early departures MUST check in/out at the Day Camp Headquarters and complete an early departure release.

For early departures, the receiving parent/guardian MUST be listed on the Scout’s registration form and provide proof of identification.

Day Camp Uniform

  • All Scouts and Adults (Walking Den Leaders working all week) will wear a Day Camp t-shirt every day.
  • Key Staff Members will wear Day Camp “STAFF” shirts.
  • Baseball style hats are recommended.
  • NO flip flops, sandals or crocs. Closed toe shoes are required!
  • Sun block and/or Insect repellant should be applied before camp.
  • Small day packs are encouraged.
  • TOWEL!

Day Camp Meals

  • Bring a non-perishable sack lunch from home (no refrigeration will be provided)
  • Meals will be stored in Den storage containers, so please make sure they are labeled with your Scout’s name

We will also have Nomads Road Dogs and Sno Depot on Friday! Scouts and families may come and purchase hot dogs to eat with their camper.

Day Camp Medical Facilities

Medical service personnel are on-site during operation of the Day Camp.

A local physician will be “on-call” and supervises all medical/health concerns related to the Day Camp.

A Private Medical Area will be in use during camp.

One “Emergency Vehicle” will be marked and available for

immediate transportation.

Day Camp Health Concerns

  • Prescription medications should be provided to the medical service personnel each morning and picked up with your Scout daily after closing assembly due to inadequate safe storage overnight.
  • Water bottles provided on first day of camp and refillable at each activity station.
  • Staff will be CPR/First Aid Trained

Be respectful of the park.

Guests (any adult not serving as a Walking

Den Leader) should check in with Camp Headquarters and will be issued a visitor tag for identification as a visitor.

Countless hours have been put into the planning of the Huntsville Cub Scout Day Camp, with many more to come!

No one is paid for day camp.

Parent volunteers are always welcome.

Any suggestions for improving your child’s experiences are welcomed and appreciated.

Day Camp Walking Den Leader�Job Description

RESPONSIBILITY: To supervise a group of Cub Scouts, ensuring their safety and well being, while assisting activity instructors, and provide an enjoyable, positive and meaningful experience at Cub Scout Day Camp.

ACCOUNTABILITY: To the Camp Director or Den Leader Coordinator as designated by the Camp Director.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

  • Complete Youth Protection Training.
  • Attend camp leader training sessions.
  • Read material provided and become acquainted with the camp program, site, and emergency provisions.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to camp starting and leave camp ONLY after all the Scouts in the Den have been accounted for and departed for the day.
  • Be prepared with songs, games, etc. for “down time”.
  • Be aware of any current or potential medical problems of the Scouts in the Den.

  • Record daily attendance of the Scouts within the first hour of camp to the Den Leader Coordinator or his/her designee.
  • Record all advancements and activities completed by the Scouts and submit completed Activity Reports to the Den Leader Coordinator at the end of each day.
  • Remind the Scouts to wear Day Camp T-shirt each day.
  • Be sure each Scout knows the camp rules and regulations and abides by the “Buddy System” at all times.
  • No Scout may leave the Day Camp area before the closing ceremony without written permission from a parent or guardian. Any Scout departing early from the Day Camp must notify the Den Leader and Camp Director before departing.
  • Do not leave the Scouts alone. Ensure there is adequate supervision by other Walking Den Leaders if you need to leave the Scouts.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the Day Camp area.
  • Follow the Day Camp’s daily schedule. Only the Program or Camp Directors can make changes

Day Camp Walking Den Leader�Job Description (cont.)

  • Leaders, Scouts and Dens are responsible for disposing of their own trash.
  • Any and all medication must be kept by the Health Officer at the First Aid Station.
  • Any medications that need to be taken during camp hours will be administered by the Health Officer. All medications must be kept in the original prescription bottle.
  • Report all injuries or illness, no matter how minor, to the Health Officer immediately.
  • Running is not allowed, except when necessary for camp activities (i.e. Field Sports).
  • Any instances requiring discipline should be referred to the Day Camp Director.

Day Camp Walking Den Leader�“A Day in the Life”

  • Arrive at Camp early enough to locate your Den’s “Rally Point” on Parade Field.
  • Check to ensure Scouts are in proper attire (camp t-shirt, appropriate shorts and shoes) when they arrive.
  • Take attendance and submit your attendance report to the Den Leader Coordinator or Camp Director.
  • Make sure Scouts are paired up in “Buddy Teams” – (The Buddy Teams will go with each other to all locations — stick together like glue!)
  • Make sure all lunches are placed in your Den’s storage container.
  • Retrieve any items from the Den storage container that will be needed for the day (i.e. Scouts’ water bottles)
  • Make sure all Scouts begin the day with water in the water bottles and routinely drink the water to remain hydrated.
  • Lead Den to proper location and session as outlined on the daily schedule.
  • Assist any activity staff to enhance the learning activities, while aiding in maintaining control and discipline of your Den.
  • Supervise your Den during lunch and any lunchtime presentations that may be scheduled.
  • Remain with all Scouts until they are picked up by their parents or guardians.

LOST CAMPERS

Once it has been determined that the camper is not with his group and is nowhere in the general vicinity, do the following:

  • Immediately notify the Camp Director.
  • If the Camp Director is not available, notify the District Executive or Program Director.
  • You may be asked to help search for the camper:
    • Do a Buddy Check.
    • Check the rest rooms, trails, lake, etc.
    • Report frequently to the Camp Director until the camper is found.
  • A reassembly of all Dens may be called. If so –
    • Bring campers you are working with back to the Den stations at the Parade Field.
    • Campers will remain in the Assembly area until the camper is found or it is determined the camper is not in camp.

SEVERE WEATHER (TORNADO OR STORMS)

Day Camp will be conducted in the heat of the summer. Alabama is known for its unpredictable weather. Should a weather emergency occur, please take heed to the following guides to protect your Den and yourself:

  • Staff members will be alerted to any weather issues by the Camp Director and Program Director.
  • The signal for a weather emergency will be THREE (3) REPETITIVE SHARP BLASTS ON THE AIR HORN.
  • Bring the Dens you are working with to your REASSEMBLY area and wait for further instructions from the Camp Director.
  • Do a roll call prior to leaving your area AND upon arrival at the REASSEMBLY area.
  • Report any lost campers to the Day Camp Director, Program Director, or Den Leader Coordinator.
  • AFTER the danger has passed, bring the campers to the REASSEMBLY area for a complete roll call and wait for further instructions from the Day Camp Director.

FIRE

  • Report any fire immediately to the Camp Director, Program Director, or District Executive.
  • Remove any campers from the scene by lining up their “buddies”. Take a quick roll call.
  • Use a fire extinguisher to douse the fire.
  • Await instructions from the Camp Director.
  • If the fire spreads quickly after steps 1 - 3, have someone begin regrouping procedures at the Assembly area on the Parade Field, after notifying the Day Camp Director or District Executive.

SERIOUS ILLNESS, INJURY OR DEATH

  • Send someone for the Camp’s medical staff immediately.
  • In a case involving lack of breathing, or shortness of breath, severe bleeding, or internal poisoning, capable and trained first-aiders should apply their skills to control and assist in the immediate treatment.
  • Notify the Camp Director and District Executive.
  • To protect yourself from liability do not discuss the incident with anyone other than the Camp’s medical staff, Camp Director or District Executive.

Unauthorized Visitors

If there is an unauthorized individual in camp, notify the Camp Director, Program Director or District Executive IMMEDIATELY.

In the unlikely event of an Active Shooter situation, direct the Scouts to run away from the shooter in any direction. EMS will help us locate all Scouts once the scene has been secured.
