Copyright & Licensing

  • A published “work” is copyrighted
  • Copyright is generally “life of author + 70 years”
  • Most works published after 1923 are in copyright

Creative Commons

“Citation is a scholarly practice for tracking the ideological underpinnings of a work, usually referencing sources like published books, articles, government documents, primary sources, etc.

Attribution is about crediting a copyright holder according to the terms of a copyright license, usually crediting artistic works like music, fiction, video, and photography.” (OpenMichigan)

Why Remix?

Update content, Change order, Add new content

  • Keep the OER up to date by adding the latest discoveries or theories
  • Adapt it for different teaching situations
  • Make something richer
  • Adapt the material to make it more accessible for people with different disabilities
  • Insert some cultural specific references to make a concept easier to understand
