Extension Gardener has been offering trips for EMG volunteers and their traveling companions for several years. This is the first time we are offering a trip to the Netherlands. Netherlands vs Holland (12 provinces), Netherlands vs the Kingdom. Low country, wealthy, trade, empire, DEIC, 18 million people, densely populated, second largest exporter of food and agricultural products (great soil, intensity, technology, trade network), so it is a great thematic complement ofr those intereste din gardening, and this trip in particular is customized to focus on gardening and floriculture

SPeak Dutch, but Duthc (Frisian) is the closest ancestor to Old English, so given their history of trade, close relationship to the Englsih speaking world (William III), 95% Dutch speak English fluently. This, along with perhaps with teh Nordic countries, it is not considered rude to assume people speak English.

The SkyFlora Garden teleports you into a magical world of flowers, where thousands of colourful blossoms form an endless cloud over your head. Its singular concept was derived from the world-famous Japanese cherry blossom season and is as yet unique in Europe.

AMAZONIAN RAINFOREST

Entering the Amazonian Rainforest is as if being transported to a tropical rainforest far away. The Amazonian Rainforest consists of three growth layers, just like an actual rainforest. This mature garden makes it possible for trees and plants to reach their full size.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN

The Butterfly Valley at the Orchideeën Hoeve in the Netherlands is the largest in Europe. More than 2,000 colourful butterflies, such as the Peleides Blue Morpho, the rice paper butterfly, and the owlet moth, call this garden home and peacefully flutter along babbling brooks and melliferous flora. Special mountain trails and steps in the Butterfly Valley allow you to access all the spots were the butterflies reside.

Treasury of Historical Bulbs (Hortus Bulborum) Day 9

The foundation manages the unique Hortus collection garden with its 4,000 spring-flowering historical bulbs. This collection consists primarily of tulips, narcissus and hyacinths, but there is also a small number of Fritillaria and crocus, primarily the C.vernus types. In addition to functioning as a gene bank, the garden has a seasonal display of thousands of heirloom bulbs, some of which are no longer in commercial production.

The Fritillaria persica on display was already in cultivation as early as 1577, while the oldest narcissus is several centuries older yet. The visiting public has the pleasure of enjoying such legendary tulips as the ‘Duc van Tol Red and Yellow ‘(1595), ‘Zomerschoon’ (1620), popular during the Tulipmania (1635-1637) period or the exotic parrot tulip ‘Perfecta” (1750), and many other fascinating examples.
