The WIN block ensures that our students can receive any outside of class support (gifted, sped, intervention, etc) they need WITHOUT missing their core instruction. We know the importance of exposure to students’ growth and our WIN block makes sure that kids get what they need as well as that exposure to grade level content. Planning makes this successful! Every kid needs to know exactly what they’re going to be doing – and everything a child is doing on their own needs to be 100% inside of a child’s independent level. This means we shouldn’t give assignments that require a lot of teacher guidance and support to our kids not meeting with us. This is a perfect time for leveled centers, adaptive technology programs, lessons with video guidance, and so forth. It’s not a very good time for research as a whole class unless every child is very successful.

I like FIT block because it helps me conference one on one with kids so we both have a chance to see where they are at, what targets they need to work on, and what goals they are currently working on.

“I love that WIN carves out specified time to utilize interventionists without kids missing core content. I would say the struggle is that a lot of kids have overlapping needs which can make scheduling a challenge or the volume in the intervention room because so many kiddos are receiving services simultaneously in there. I think the fact that we have such a great team of interventionists allows everyone to be flexible and encourages teamwork for people who might otherwise be more isolated in the building.”

“FIT Block is a critical time to work with small groups of students on a focused skill. A school day simply doesn’t always provide enough time to pull students to strengthen skills needed or to support them one-on-one. It’s often the time I find most of my students shine, because they see their teachers genuinely want to help them in an area needed and take the time out of the day to do just that. It is our time to grow and our time to shine!”

“Data notebooks informs kids of so much of where they're at and where they're trying to get to. I plan WIN with each kid in mind, making sure that the needs are met of the whole range of learners. Finishing our WIN time with community building or SEL lessons is also a great way to keep our class culture in good shape.”

“The biggest struggles I face during WIN are monitoring the variety of needs/goals for each student - especially in regards to target recovery. When students are working on multiple different levels and subjects it can be a challenge to provide the support needed.”

“The extra support that intervention teachers are able to provide to students who need the extra support. It is very strategically planned and implemented carefully planning and communicating with all teachers that are supporting students including CLD, Speech, Sped, SLP and MH. In addition students can receive support from more than one intervention teacher due to the collaboration and communication that is so well planned in the beginning of the year.”
