Tutorial Norms

How It Works

Who goes to Tutorial?

Each day, a teacher’s tutorial is for one of these groups:

ASSIGNED students

LIMITED students

OPEN to all students

Who goes to Tutorial?

Assigned students:

• Are assigned by their teacher to attend tutorial on a specific date for a specific reason.
• For example: Make up a test, complete missing work, etc.
• If you are assigned, attendance in that room is mandatory. You will not be able to sign in elsewhere.

Who goes to Tutorial?

Limited students means:

• The teacher decides what group of students is permitted to attend. e.g. Tutorial today is limited to:
• My current students
• My current or former students
• IM 1 students
• Freshmen
• Etc…

Who goes to Tutorial?

OPEN to all students means:

• The tutorial welcomes any Leigh student.

How do I know where I can go for tutorial?

Look for these signs outside classrooms.

Attendance

Attendance Basics

All students are required to attend tutorial every day, even if you have an off period in the morning. Your day starts with tutorial.

• Sign-in within the first five minutes.
• Absences will be recorded as truancies (unexcused absence).
• If you are marked absent for Tutorial, a phone call will go home.
• Be on time—teachers will record tardies.

How to sign in

Teachers will use a variety of methods:

• Set up a Chromebook for you to scan your ID or enter your student number
• Go around the room and scan your ID card with their phone
• Have you come up to their desk to sign in
• Etc.

YOU are responsible for getting signed-in within the first five minutes of tutorial, or you may be marked absent. If you don’t know how to sign in, ASK.

5-Star is software Leigh uses to assign students to tutorial and to take tutorial attendance. You will use 5-Star to see where you’ve been assigned.

1. Mobile app
2. Website

This is how you’ll see if you’ve been assigned to a tutorial.

Steps:

• Allow notifications
• Tap United States
• Tap California
• Type “Leigh” and tap Leigh High School
• Tap Sign In With Google
• Use your school Google account

Two ways to see if you’re assigned to tutorial (called “Sign-Ups”):

2. Tutorial Sign Up → See list

Yours will be blank now, but if/when you’ve been assigned to a tutorial, it will be listed here.

Assigned Tutorial

YOU are responsible for knowing if you’ve been assigned to a tutorial, so

• Make sure notifications are on
• Check 5-Star regularly (app or website)

If you’ve been assigned tutorial and you try to sign-in elsewhere, you’ll see an error message:

Q: What if I’m assigned to more than one tutorial on the same day?

• A: You attend the priority day tutorial:

Priority Days

Some examples:

• Your science and English teachers have assigned you tutorial today. It’s Monday. You have to go to English since English is the Monday priority subject.
• Your science and English teachers have assigned you tutorial today. It’s Tuesday. Neither subject has priority that day, so YOU get to choose which assigned tutorial you go to.

Miscellaneous things to know

• The cafeteria is open during tutorial for quiet individual work.
• You’re expected to stay in one tutorial for the whole period unless you have a compelling reason to see another teacher.
• e.g. You were absent yesterday and need to touch base with all three teachers, etc.

Tutorial schedule for the start of school

Tuesday: Stay with your 1st period class for tutorial

Wednesday: Stay with your 4th period class for tutorial

Thursday: Go to your 2nd period class for tutorial

Friday: You choose where to go for tutorial

If you don’t have a class 1st, 4th, or 2nd period, report to the cafeteria for tutorial on those days.
