Pickleball: Playing – Banned - Reinstated

September 2023: Pickleball was banned from Ala Moana. Police were called.

February: 2500 + signatures were signed for pickleball to be allowed back at Ala Moana

March 19th: Met with Brandon Kono and he approved the pickleball lines to be drawn permanently at Ala Moana Tennis Hitting Wall

March 20th: Submitted the declaration of gift for the pickleball lines - donation for $1500 to paint three lines

April 25th Sent email asking for an update to the lines

April 29th: Sent email asking for paint color confirmation

May15th: Called Councilman Say’s Office to see if our gift was in their quarterly report. They said no.

July 1st: Received the specification of the pickleball paint color

July 24th: Called back to Calvin Say’s office and they confirmed that DPR did not send over donation request.

August 13th: Received email from Brandon – middle of August when we will get word from City Clerk’s Office regarding the quarterly report

August 19th: Received email saying DPR administrative secretary has been on vacation for weeks so our gift is still in limbo. Single point of failure.

February 2024: “Tennis Only” signs were placed at all 10 courts and the hitting wall

Solutions

Short Term:

  • Finalize the painting of the three pickleball court lines using the funds donated to the City and County
  • Remove the “Tennis Only” signs
  • Fix the broken lights

Medium Term:

  • Paint pickleball lines on five tennis courts on the mauka side
  • Convert four tennis courts into dedicated pickleball courts

Long Term:

  • Build 12 dedicated covered pickleball courts at Ala Moana
