Background

  • PEARC24 EC BoF Discussion Themes
  • Broader representation on the EC Steering Committee
  • Help emerging centers feel like “part of the club”
  • Help in growing through stories – First set of “Origin Stories” in April!
  • The EC Steering Committee vision for addressing #2:
    • Create our own peer groups to create community among emerging centers
    • Unstructured, more personal discussions
    • Peer-oriented – Not about teaching or mentoring, but listening, sharing, and engaging
    • Unrecorded / Un-AIed (per People Network Policy)
    • Metaphors and Comparisons: Pen-pals, book club, water-cooler, a sounding board, dinner party
      • Note: Lecture, workshop, training, How-to are NOT on that list… We have many places to go for technical help and we’re not trying to duplicate that.

Group Guidelines / Formation Process

  • Format
    • #1 Priority: Sharing
      • Round-robin check-in
      • Propose a topic of interest to discuss?
    • Meet when the group decides
  • Community
    • As each group sees fit
    • Expected to abide by CaRRC Code of Conduct
  • Group Formation
    • A random assignment of group members is unlikely to create lasting relationships…
    • So, we are going to try an unconference today to build groups around common interests
    • Topic Ideas: Geography, Institution Mission/Size, Technologies, Policies, Extra-curricular activities

Next Steps

  • Take that list of names you made of interesting people you talked with today and email them to form a peer group! Remember, folks are here because they’d like to be part of one!
  • Or, if this was fun today and something you want to do more often, join a CaRCC committee (People Track, Interest or Working Group, CASC Position Paper)
  • Once to have critical mass (2 - ?? people), decide on a meeting time and schedule.
  • If you need a virtual platform to meet on, email ec-coordinators@carcc.org and we’ll setup the Zoom link for you (or, use your own!).
  • Comments… Questions? What did you think?
