FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2021

Sponsorship Prospectus

2 of 15

FOSS4G SotM Oceania is a regional event that brings together the open source geospatial community.

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G):

  • FOSS4G is the label for Open Source Geospatial Foundation conferences (OSGeo - http://osgeo.org)
  • OSGeo supports development and adoption of open source geospatial technology internationally
  • FOSS4G reflects the broader open source software philosophy (see https://opensource.com/resources/what-open-source)

State of the Map (SotM)

  • SotM is the label for OpenStreetMap Foundation conferences (https://www.openstreetmap.org)
  • The OpenStreetMap project is a long-running effort to build a free and open editable map of the world
  • SotM is a platform to discuss the wider project strategy, support tools, and share inspiring case studies

To focus Oceania’s open source geospatial efforts, we have combined these two conferences. FOSS4G SotM Oceania gives Oceania a link to global communities of developers and users; supported by the OSGeo foundation and the OpenStreetMap Foundation.

FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2021 is taking place at locally organised hubs across the region.

Introducing FOSS4G and State of the Map

This year the official conference will be a one day event.

  • The conference day will involve a period of regionally shared content as well as locally organised content.
    • The shared content will last for 60 minutes and will be broadcast to each participating hub. This shared content includes keynote speakers, introductions from participating hubs, and a thank you to all our sponsors.
    • Each local hub will be organising their own specific content, with programs featuring local speakers. Past topics have included OpenStreetMap, QGIS, field survey tools, and remote sensing.

FOSS4G SotM Oceania is a diverse and safe event, operating under a code of conduct to be found on our website.

Exposure to a dynamic and growing community

  • The open source geospatial community is growing steadily year by year
  • Progressively more organisations are utilizing QGIS, PostGIS and GDAL in their geospatial toolset
  • OpenStreetMap is growing with 45,000 monthly active contributors
  • Apple, Facebook, Grab and Microsoft and other industry leaders are all working with the community to improve OpenStreetMap and create an open source of map data

Sponsorship gives you prominent exposure to each of these stakeholders and allows you to both advertise and demonstrate your organisation’s value within the community.

Support the development of open source geospatial tools

FOSS4G SotM Oceania is a non-profit event. All surplus funds are reinvested into smaller regional events and initiatives to increase participation and contribution quality.

Support an inclusive conference

Since we began in 2018, sponsorship has enabled us to reduce ticket prices for students and community members in need. This helps ensure diversity of ideas and perspectives which is especially important for sustaining the open source community across a region with wide differences in socio-economic status.

Our approach to COVID uncertainty

This conference is taking place at a number of cities in countries throughout the region. While this greatly reduces the chance that COVID will disrupt the entire conference, there is a very real likelihood that certain hubs may be affected. We’ll be following government guidelines in each hub location and will endeavour to move some hubs online should COVID restrictions prevent a physical meetup from occurring.

How does this affect your sponsorship?

The FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2021 organising committee and OSGeo Oceania reserve the right to modify aspects of the sponsorship offering in line with COVID contingencies. For example, if a local hub is forced to hold their conference online, flyers will be distributed via email rather than at a physical event. In the unlikely event the conference does not go ahead at all, OSGeo Oceania will refund sponsorship funds raised.

The open source software community runs on an economy of giving.

Good Mojo was developed as a pool of funds with the mission to enable everyone to participate in community events, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, educational background, or financial situation. The concept gives people and organisations the opportunity to donate whatever they can afford, with contributions directly funding diversity and accessibility initiatives.

The types of initiatives that Good Mojo has supported in the past include:

  • Funding a travel grant program that would enable those in under-represented communities with a financial disadvantage to attend. This initiative is particularly focused on citizens of Pacific Island Countries and indigenous communities in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Organising networking events for under-represented groups.
  • Initiatives to create a child-friendly conference.
  • Reducing the cost of attendance for community members who are self funded.
  • Tree planting to offset the carbon footprint generated by conference travel

If you choose donate Good Mojo funds, you will be identified as a ‘Good Mojo’ contributor on the conference website and in conference proceedings.

FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2020 was held at hubs across the region to help us mitigate the effects of COVID:

  • Over 500 people attended across Oceania
    • 375 attended in person at physical hubs while another 150 attended online
    • The Perth hub sold 83 tickets alone
  • 4 countries in Oceania were able to put together local hubs in 2020 with at least 5 expected for 2021
  • Attendees included GIS professionals, developers, hobbyists, humanitarian workers, and government agencies

Sponsors of FOSS4G SotM Oceania gain access to a diverse group of people shaping the evolution of open source geospatial software. The conference is a healthy mix of geospatial professionals, software developers, community leaders, and end users.

A working group was established at the conclusion of FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2018 and tasked with investigating a suitable entity to support Oceania’s open geospatial community.

OSGeo Oceania (OO) was created out of this effort as a not-for-profit entity that supports the long-term sustainability of the community. OO has formalised relationships with OSGeo and the OpenStreetMap Foundation as the local chapter for both organisations.

There is also a dedicated conference committee focused on the delivery of a successful FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2021.
