“Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life. I don’t care what you do for a living—if you do it well I’m sure there was someone cheering you on or

showing the way. A mentor.”

Mentorship Best Practices

10

Mentors

  • Recognize that mentees may be uncomfortable asking for help – break ice by sharing some of your career experiences
  • But remember: your experience may not be the same as theirs
  • Advise, do not manage
  • Extend mentee’s professional developmental network – suggest additional mentors to address unique needs
  • Professional developmental needs may change. Be flexible!
  • Be an active listener!
  • Extend grace

Mentee Best Practices

11

Mentees

  • Ask questions and be open to feedback
  • Understand that “learning is a two-way street”
  • Seek counsel and advice, not supervision
  • Understand that one mentor is unlikely to fulfill all developmental needs. Mentorship is an ongoing process, that can last beyond this program
  • Be proactive!
  • Extend grace
  • Own the opportunity
