Custom Porcelain Finishes

We’re able to develop custom porcelain glaze finishes, however developing a new glaze is not as simple as mixing paint colors.

  • Requires precision chemistry with a minimum of 30+ hours of development time.
  • Some glaze color and sheen combinations are not possible.
  • The finish on your final sculpture may have a slightly different in color or sheen than the approved sample.

Process:

  • We will provide one physical sample for your review and sign-off prior to production.
  • We’ll send a photo of the finished porcelain components before final assembly.
  • Please add 2-4 weeks additional lead time.

We ask you to provide:

  • Physical sample/swatch shipped to our studio.
  • Specify your requested sheen/texture:
    • Matte | Rough
    • Satin | Smooth
    • Gloss | Smooth

Translucent Matte Porcelain

TBS098

Available only for the Dome Collection in sizes 8, 10, 12, 14 inch. Not available in larger sizes.

Our porcelain is fired to more than 2000-degrees, transforming the minerals of clay into stone. In the case of translucent porcelain, we fire the clay even hotter so that the porcelain begins to transition from stone to molten glass.

In transitioning to glass, the porcelain begins to lose its form. At the smaller sizes, the distortion is minimally noticeable. However at the larger sizes the distortion is more pronounced.

Please anticipate waves, dents, and general deformation when specifying translucent porcelain.

Braided Metal Cording

Not your standard 1/4" cloth covered cord.

Our swag and pendant cording is made from finely braided brass, constructed with a substantial 1/2" diameter.

The brass exterior allows us to apply our custom metal patinas to the cording. You can specify the finish to match the other metal components, or choose a unique finish.

The internal body of the cording, combined with our proprietary assembly and packaging techniques, gives the cords a smooth and graceful shape.

Cutting / Shortening

The length of the cords is set during the design phase, with your signature on a shop drawing. You can also cut the cords on-site if needed, though it’s a somewhat involved process. See instructions.

Dome Reflector

Our domes reflect light from the back inside of the dome. Darker porcelain finishes will diminish the light output. Colored gloss porcelain finishes will cast mildly colored light.

If your light sculpture will be used for accent lighting, a reflector is not required. If your light sculpture will be used as a primarily light source, we recommend the use of a reflector.

A “reflector” is a thin metal dish that sits inside the dome, that will restore the light to full strength.

  • Satin Nickel Reflector : Casts light that is color accurate to your specification.
    • See video
  • Satin Brass Reflector : Casts light that is warmer than the color temperature specified.

Domes With LED Strip

The standard lighting option for Domes is 120V bulbs, which do not require any special wiring considerations for homes in the US.

For special projects, we can integrate LED strip in place of the standard bulbs. Examples include:

  • Ketra compatibility
  • Custom light temperature (e.g. 2400K)
  • Warm dim light
  • Tunable white light

The LED strip will not be visible inside the domes. We integrate the strip by replacing the bulbs with a metal “barrel” that the strip is adhered to. The barrel is hidden out of sight behind the opaque “shield” on the front of the dome.

With certain configurations, you may be able to a narrow sliver of the light source while viewing the dome from the side. To ensure the light is soft and pleasant, we cover the light source with a diffuser.

Narrow sliver of light may be visible when viewing domes from side.

LED strip integrated inside domes out of sight.

Domes Standard Bulbs

We use Emery Allen LED G8 bulbs as the standard lighting option for our dome sculptures. They come in 120V or 230V. You may purchase direct from Emery Allen or through Ted Bradley Studio.

  • Dome Size #8 : (2) 6.0W bulbs
  • Dome Size #10 : (4) 4.5W bulbs
  • Dome Size #12 : (5) 6.0W bulbs
  • Dome Size #14 : (5) 7.0W bulbs
  • Dome Size #18 : (6) 7.0W bulbs
  • Dome Size #22 : (7) 7.0W bulbs

Changing The Bulbs

If you find that a bulb is no longer performing, you can easily replace it without tools or needing an electrician.

  • Unscrew the round metal “shield” by gently turning it counter-clockwise.
  • Remove bulbs by pulling them out of their sockets.
  • Insert the new bulbs into the sockets.
  • Screw metal shield back into mount clockwise. Take care to position the shield level with respect to the dome when starting to screw on the shield, to avoid damaging the threads. Stop when snug. Do not over tighten.

21 of 32

Domes Light Casting

The domes create a smooth and even light cast, without hard lines or shadows, ideal for task lighting required for an office or kitchen island.

The domes not not create a donut shape of light, despite the inner “shield” being opaque.

Handmade Process

The porcelain components in your sculpture start their lives as wet mud. There will be signs of the handmade process in the final piece including small indentations and other surface variations.

The metal components are individually hand polished and given a patina. Each part and batch of parts will be unique, which includes variations of color and other “imperfections” that tell the story of your unique sculpture.

Care & Cleaning

27 of 32

Care & Cleaning Instructions

Porcelain

  • GENERAL CLEANING: Use a dry feather duster or can of compressed air.
  • STAINS: For marks, stains, and fingerprints follow the instructions below.

For all porcelain types, do your best to keep the scrubbing contained to just the area of the blemish to avoid spreading.

    • White Stone Matte (Bisque)
    • Matte Glazes
    • Satin & Gloss Glazes
      • First try gently cleaning affected area with a dry Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (original) scrub pad.
      • Next try to wipe with a soft lint-free cloth, slightly damp “shammy” cloth, or white paper towel. Use plain water or water with a drop of mild, clear dish soap. Pull front of cloth up and away from the surface as you’re wiping so that you’re lifting the contaminant away rather than pushing it deeper.
      • Next try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (original) scrub pad damp (not soaking) with 95-99% isopropyl alcohol.
    • Translucent Porcelain

Notes

  • Avoid using strong or colored cleaning products or solvents (no bleach, windex, goo-gone, colored soaps, etc).
  • Avoid rough or abrasive scrubbing pads such as Scotch-Brite, unless specifically directed to do so.
  • Test a small section before cleaning the entire surface.

Metal Components

  • GENERAL CLEANING: Dust with a dry duster or compressed air. You may also wipe with a soft lint-free cloth, slightly damp “shammy” cloth, or white paper towel.
  • STAINS: Use plain water, or water diluted with a drop of mild, clear dish soap.

Braided Cords

  • Do not wipe with paper products such as paper towels or tissue because the fuzz can become embedded in the cord
  • GENERAL CLEANING: Dust with a dry duster or compressed air. You may also wipe cords with a slightly damp “shammy” cloth.
  • STAINS: Use plain water, or water diluted with a drop of mild clear dish soap, with a slightly damp “shammy” cloth.

Shipping Services

Boxing & Packaging [REQUIRED]

We’ve spent several hundred hours engineering a packaging solution that can safely ship our ultra-fragile porcelain rings. The packaging is lightweight and compact rather than heavy such as wood crates, which reduces cost of transit and means the sculpture can easily be carried up stairs and through tight doorways.

Shipping Transit [OPTIONAL, INCLUDED BY DEFAULT]

The box(es) can be delivered to the lobby of a building, front door of a house, an adjacent garage awaiting installation, or receiving warehouse. Signature and scheduled appointment are required for delivery.

Each box weighs a maximum of 49 lbs with dimensions of 31 x 31 x 18 inches or smaller.

Your Own Shipping

You are also welcome to make arrangements for your own shipping. Please contact us to arrange pickup from our studio.

This guarantees we can provide you with immediate replacement with no-charge rush service should there be any breakage or loss during shipment. Without this insurance, replacement is subject to carrier claim.

Return Shipping for Zero Waste [OPTIONAL, INCLUDED BY DEFAULT]

Shipping is a top source of waste in the home. We include shipping labels for the return shipment of our packaging materials so that they can be reused and recycled.

Receiving & Inside Delivery [NOT INCLUDED]

If you require delivery to a specific unit inside a building or delivery inside a house, please make arrangements with a local receiving/moving company.
