Positive Communication Action Step

  • Today our meeting started at 3:25 instead of 3:15 so each of you could have time to contact a parent/guardian by phone after school to share student progress, something positive about their student or to share a concern.
  • On your hand out please respond to the prompts:
    • Who did you contact today?
    • Did you share progress, positive or concern?
    • How does making a personal connection by phone encourage partnership with families?
    • After 1 minute, turn & talk to a partner about your responses.

Consistency…..Clarity…..Communication

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center-based Program

Irving Middle School

7 of 23

Did You Know…

Nebraska once had a residential school for the Deaf?

Located in Omaha, it opened in 1869 and was closed in 1998.

LPS has been serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students for 100 years?

The first program serving D/HH students began at Prescott Elementary in 1922.

Irving has held the center-based program for D/HH for decades, although the exact year it began isn’t known.

(Trust me, Mrs. Cejda helped with research and came up empty =)

Our best guess is the late 1970s!

Some things to keep in mind . . .

  • D/HH students can perform at the same level as their peers

  • Teaching a D/HH student requires you to look at lesson and classroom elements in a different way
