Summer of Discovery 2023

Through Summer of Discovery 2023 learning experiences, students will develop key competencies, mindsets, and conceptual understandings essential for success in school. These will be cross-curricular, with many cross-grade levels, and all academic and enrichment experiences will contribute to students’ mastery of these.

​

The goal of an equity-driven summer learning model is to ensure that all students have access to the same quality of instruction. Equity-driven summer learning models are essential in providing access to quality education for all students and closing the achievement gap. These models focus on providing access to high-quality learning experiences that are engaging and supportive, allowing students to continue their learning during the summer months. They also provide access to enrichment activities and courses that focus on literacy, mathematics, and science, as well as social-emotional learning. These activities will help students become more independent learners and better prepare them for the upcoming school year. Our equity-driven summer learning models also include field trips, hands-on activities, and outdoor exploration that can help build students’ skills and knowledge base.

Roc Achieve (6-7)

• Program Description and Highlights�Roc Achieve is a middle school program that provides engaging, real-world science and math learning opportunities. Roc Achieve utilizes the AVID Math and Science STEM Summer Bridge programs, which are designed to strengthen students’ math and science skills and increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in Algebra 1.�Each program teaches rigorous content focused on note-taking, interactive notebooks, writing and vocabulary activities, and team building to engage students in STEM opportunities. The engaging, interactive lessons and collaborative activities also incorporate strategies that support English Language Learners. Enrichment opportunities are provided daily, including The Amazing Shake and Write Brain creative writing programs.�Student Capacity�500 students currently in grades 6-7

• Program Description and Highlights�The RCSD summer sports camp immerses current and future student-athletes in specific skill development in their chosen sport. It can be a fun time for beginners to learn basic skills and strategies, and develop friendships and teamwork, all while building a foundation for future sports success. • Program Description and Highlights�This summer at St. John Fisher University campus, we want our students to be inspired. The Freshman Academy immerses current 8th-graders in rigorous coursework and engaging enrichment experiences built to enhance their study skills so they can begin 9th grade with high school credits. Students will take Regents classes and electives, including Urban Poetry, Latino Studies, Creative Writing and Modern Global events.�Students in this program will also get a window into college life at St. John Fisher University. Professors from the university will lead special workshops daily with students this summer and will track this cohort of summer school students for the rest of their high school career in hopes they will apply and choose to attend St. John Fisher University in the fall of 2027.��Student Capacity�250 students currently in grade 8��Program Information�July 5 - August 15, 2023�Times TBD ��Program Locations�St. John Fisher University
