Building Connections Begins at Birth

At each well-child visit for children birth through 5 years, Reach Out and Read clinicians offer anticipatory guidance surrounding early relationships and literacy and give children a new developmentally, culturally, and linguistically responsive book to keep and build their home libraries. Our core model historically started at the 6-month well-child visit, yet early childhood research unequivocally demonstrates that our work truly begins at birth.

The first five months of a child’s life are when foundational relationships develop between a caregiver and child at an unparalleled rate. These relationships shape the trajectory of everything that follows: child development, family resilience, and perseverance through adversity.

With Building Connections Begins at Birth, we are focusing on the relationship between the parent and the child, beginning at birth, to reach children in those first critical months of life, engage parents from the start, and deepen our support for families.

If you would like to start implementing Building Connection Begins at Birth contact Amy at acrosby@roralabama.org for more information.

NEW Reach Out and Read Strategic Plan

Celebrating 35 Years of Reach Out and Read With 350,000 BooksA message from Reach Out and Read CEO Marty Martinez

Reach Out and Read National recently launched 35 for 35, a specially curated collection of books that celebrate the millions of families you have helped us serve in the last 35 years — and the millions more we will reach together. In partnership with Scholastic, we have assembled a visionary, wide-ranging collection of authors and works that reflect Reach Out and Read’s mission and the healthy families and communities we will continue to support and help build.

These books will

• embrace the full range of family structures and identities we serve.

• highlight vibrant stories about inclusive communities and cultures.

• create moments of meaningful interaction that cement lifelong family bonds and lay the foundation for early literacy.

• offer clinicians a variety of ways to increase engagement with books, including

high-profile authors, additional digital resources, and fun, relatable tales.

Visit reachoutandread.org/35for35 to find engaging content about and inspired by these books. Any questions? Contact Amy at acrosby@roralabama.org
