What happens in El Salvador?

  • El Salvador has a high vulnerability to climate and anthropogenic threats, with a high risk level of 6.9, according to LAC INFORM 2019.
  • Among the environmental challenges, the reduction of vulnerability to climate change (CC) generates serious impact on the livelihoods of the most vulnerable, including children, adolescent and youth.
  • Climate change is becoming a major challenge for overcoming poverty and the exclusion of the most vulnerable populations, particularly in rural areas.
  • These concerns are shared regionally and globally.

"We young people have experienced the effects of climate change and we know that if we do not act, our future is at risk..."

"Therefore, our main objective is that many young people join the initiative that we promote to reduce the risk of disasters in our communities" "

Capacity building on the Role of Youth in Climate Change and climate advocacy (2020-2021)

  • UNICEF and the LWF/SM developed a training process on the Role of Youth in Climate Change and Climate Advocacy, aiming to implement learning strategies and methodologies for climate change awareness and advocacy.

  • The need to strengthen knowledge and awareness on environmental rights and inclusive approaches with women and youth, who can contribute to a sustainable community response, was identified through the interventions

  • By strengthening youth skills, individual and collective capacities, they will promote enviroment protection, reducing the impact caused by Climate Change and the overexploitation of natural resources.

Our experience and projections

  • The program contributed to positioning the demands of youth, making visible the importance of being agents of change, especially empowering women in climate justice, strengthening family relationships with the environment and generating changes in habits for adaptation and resilience to Climate Change.

  • The training process was basaed on UNICEF's “Toolkit for Young Climate Activists in Latin America and the Caribbean”. There was also a webinar with UNICEF LACRO and UNICEF El Salvador where Youth for Climate Justice was recognized for their work.

  • Youth are change agents and their voices matter for decision-making

  • Participation and incidence spaces and initiatives for youth must be created at all levels (national and regional), to generate intergenerational dialogues with government institutions, civil society and academia.
