A National Challenge

By 2021, 69% of employers expect candidates with DSA skills to get preference for jobs in their organizations. Only 23% of college and university leaders say their graduates will have those skills.

Increasingly US jobs require data science and analytics skills. Can we meet the demand? The current shortage of skills in the national job pool demonstrates that business-as-usual strategies won’t satisfy.

A Connected World of Data & Computation

  • The world’s knowledge at our fingertips
  • Digitalization of life, industry, and society
  • Intimately connected to billions of us, globally
  • Machine reading of everything
  • Vast computational power to do analytics
  • Explosion of observational instruments
    • Genomics, Microscopy, Astronomical, …
  • Synthetic design exploration thru simulation
  • Statistical machine learning algorithms to “discover” structure
  • Interwoven with the societal and human experience

Recognition that we are not organized optimally for the connected century that we are well into.

Extremely important confluence in fields that have grown up separately need to be recognized, supported and enhanced. Unprecedented Computational and inferential capabilities processes around transformative High-V digital observations – data – are reshaping to almost every field of inquiry, deep in their own right, and transformative in certain fields.

Overlapping nature of research and learning is the NORM not the exception.

This “refactoring” can only be done well from “bottom up”. Only deep within the departments, labs, and programs do we really have the understanding of the synergies, barriers, and opportunities.

Integrated with, vs Differentiated from. A Part of you, not apart from you, …

It does require putting the parochial cultures and mindsets that tacit in our very worldview – on the back burner.

A Division involves intellectual coherence – but it also is fundamentally about organizational culture. Creating culture, represented in day to day processes, that recognizes the interrelationships among and with others.
