The Buzau Land UNESCO International Geopark

  • For 1 and a half years, the Buzău Land UNESCO International Geopark has been a source of local pride, but also one of the landmarks that gives Buzău Land a place of honor on the map of responsible tourism. The UNESCO accreditation of the Buzăului Geopark can be viewed from several perspectives, but I want to mention two. It is certainly a reward for the efforts of the three partners, who joined hands for the sustainable and harmonious development of this territory. But I think the most important aspect refers to the valuing of some communities, traditions and places that we, Buzoians, value and that represent our great cultural heritage.
  • The places to visit in Buzău Land are the mud volcanoes from Berca, the trovantian from Ulmet, the Amber Museum from Colti, the Hen with the Golden Chicks from Pietroasele, which represent part of Romania's treasure and other beautifull places.

Local traditions

  • Caroling around the houses, with the Ploughshare, walking with the goat and the bear, as well as with the Sorcova are ancient customs in the Buzoian lands. In the mountain areas: Pleși, Vintilă Vodă, Lopătari and even in the plain area: Săgeata, Gherăseni, etc. these traditions are still practiced, which give us continuity and steadfastness.Harrowing with the ploughs, Ploughshare(Plugusorul)as it is called in the people, is an ancient agrarian custom, which is till practiced today. On New Year's Eve, and in many places even on New Year's Day, a group of young men, less than twenty, single or recently married, go from house to house to wish a rich year. With the Pluguşor, the children also go today.
  • Dragaica is a ritual of agrarian origin, practiced on June 24 in Muntenia, Moldova and Oltenia, around the summer solstice. The ritual aims at the prosperity and protection of crops, especially the protection of grain crops. This celebration coincides with the Christian celebration of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Tradition requires that no one work on this day because on this day it is midsummer and the sun plays in the sky or stands still at noon.A week-long festival is also organized during this period.

  • Plescoi sausages are typical products from this area made from sheep meat and left to dry for a certain period. They also contain Paprika from peppers grown on the territory of Buzău and dried in the sun. Buzău pretzels are obtained from a soft dough. They are given a round shap, boiled in water after which they are put in the oven and baked.
