  • Many topics related to division
    • Extended division facts
    • Traditional division → ask your student about “Does McDonalds Serve Cheese Burgers?”
    • Finding the area of a rectangle when a side length is missing
  • Units of Weight
  • Angles
    • Using a half circle protractor
    • Supplementary and complementary angles
  • Number stories with fractions and mixed numbers

Wonders

We have been progressing through Wonders by starting Unit 4 this month. So far in this unit, we have been focusing on:

  • Government (look on the next slide to see photos of our government projects!)
    • The 3 levels of government: local, state, and national
    • The 3 branches of government: legislative, executive, and judicial
  • Sound waves and technology (look at slide 4 for some photos of our telephone experiment)
  • Cause and effect
  • Creating book jackets in writing → each student has picked a person, who has made an impact on our country, and then they created a book jacket about their person.
    • Persuasive writing on the back of their book jacket → convincing their readers that their person had an impact on our country.
    • Narrative nonfiction → expert from the book
    • Quotes from readers
    • Text features → incorporating a timeline of their person’s main events
  • Pronouns
  • Homophones

Reminder: Wonders is our English Language Arts curriculum. It focuses on reading, writing, grammar, but it incorporates science & social studies.

Sound Waves via Paper Cup Telephones

February 23, 2023

Students explored sound waves and how they travel by creating paper telephones. They then experimented with different variables.

What if the string was longer? Shorter?

What if we used a different string? Thicker string? Thinner string?

What if we tried to add a 3rd person to do a 3-way phone call?

Independent Reading (AR Reading)

-4A’s February Newsletter-

Ms. Davidshofer

Student received a new BINGO board when they returned from winter break. Their BINGO for this quarter is due March 3rd. For more information about this quarter’s BINGO board, please see the bright pink BINGO board in your child’s folder.

This quarter, Mrs. Heffta, the school librarian, is adding in some prizes for reading. For each BINGO that the students earn, they will receive a small prize. If they get a black out board, they are entered into a drawing for a gift card. Plus, there is also a classroom BINGO board. For each black out BINGO that 4A earns, we will be entered into a drawing to win a BINGO party (snacks and prizes in the library.) Keep on Reading!

Remember: In recent years due to the pandemic, AR quizzes have had a little more flexibility. However, with the pandemic mostly behind us, it’s 4th grade policy that ALL AR quizzes must be taken at school. Therefore, all future quizzes must be taken at school. students have opportunities to take AR quizzes during morning work, centers, Ketchup & Pickles (aka study hall), so there are multiple opportunities throughout the day for AR quizzes here at school

Central Code

February’s Social Emotional Learning focus was Responsibility. We learned about traits of responsible people as well how we can be responsible in our school lives and our home lives. Students worked to brainstorm all of the responsibilities they have in their lives from: homework, taking care of pets, practicing for their sports, emptying the dishwasher and more. We then did a project where we created “What’s On Our Plate?” to show all of our responsibilities.

In the coming months, we will continue to learn about what it means to be a Central Trojan by focusing on the different traits that make up a Trojan.

Congratulations to Zeke for being honored at 4A’s responsible student!

Central Intermediate’s Grade Scale

Just a reminder: here is the CIS grade scale, which is how your child will be scored on assignments & assessments. If your child does not show mastery on an assignment or assessment, they’ll be required to redo until they can show mastery. Often, they’ll receive some reteaching during centers or ketchup and pickles (study hall) to help ensure they understand the content.

Typing Practice + Games

Does your child need some more practice to become more efficient with typing on their Chromebook? We are making typing more of a focus this semester, and students are going to have specific lessons to accomplish each week during centers. In addition to the lessons, there are also numerous typing games found, on typing.com as well as the 4A website. The games are linked at the bottom of the student links portion. Some of these games are a lot of fun if I must admit.
