Dear Parents and Guardians:
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your winter break. I also hope you are relaxed, recharged, and ready to start the new year. I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to continue working with you and your children during the second semester.
The spring semester is filled with many exciting things happening on campus. We will be celebrating Literacy Week January 24-28th. The theme is “Blast Into New Worlds.” We will have an exciting week of activities planned for students to foster their love of literacy. We are also planning for two big events that will take place in the near future- including our PTO Glow Party in February and a Family Math and Science night in March. You won’t want to miss it!
As always, thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us each and every day. Your partnership in your child’s education is so important. My door is always open to you!

Estamos también planificando dos eventos muy importantes en el futuro cercano incluyendo Fiesta de Resplandor del PTO en febrero y una Noche de Matemáticas y Ciencias Familiar en marzo. No pueden faltar!

Teachers have been using AVID strategies to get their students engaged in their learning! These strategies help students learn to communicate and share their ideas in various ways. They also get them up and moving!

Student attendance is so important to their success. Please be sure students are in attendance and on time daily. If a student is out for a legitimate reason, such as an illness, please be sure to send in an excuse note with the student when they return to school so we can update their attendance as an excused absence. If a student is out more than 3 days, a note from their doctors office is required.
We appreciate your help in this so students daily attendance is accurate, and we can provide the necessary supports so your child can be successful.

What is a School Advisory Council?
The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a team of people representing various segments of the community–parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, business/industry members and other interested community partners. The purpose of a SAC is to assist in the preparation and evaluation of the results of the school improvement plan and to assist the principal with the annual school budget.
Join us at our next meeting in January 25th at 7:30am at the Parent Resource Center.

Kindergarten:
PSE’s Kindergarten students are ready for the new year and all the learning ahead. Our students are smart and eager to become knowledge experts!
In Benchmark Unit 6 we are discussing the messages we learn in the stories we read. Each day in class we review our Essential Question - “How Do We Know What is Right?”. During the lesson we focus on phonological awareness, phonics, and sight words; we also work on fluency, concepts of print and syntax and grammar.
You can help your child succeed in reading by listening to your child read the books and flashcards that come home each day in your child’s book baggie. Studies show that reading 15 minutes each day can improve reading comprehension and fluency.
Our kindergarten mathematicians will delve into measurement and data during quarter three. You can discuss measurement with your child and ask questions about the length, height and weight of objects in your home.
First Grade:
Port Salerno Elementary first graders are loving to read awesome books! They are excited to share their books with friends and with their teachers! We are learning many strategies to figure out tricky words! We are practicing “tapping out” words, checking the pictures, and rereading to make sure it looks and sounds right! What an exciting time in first grade!
In our Benchmark Advance unit, we are learning about technology and how it has changed over the years! We have been learning about robots and how they make our lives easier! Robots that clean our rooms, deliver medicine at the hospital, and lift cars! Some students were dreaming about robots that could do their homework.
First graders are writing what we know about many different topics. We are also sharing our opinions about the stories we are reading. We use grammar, punctuation, and proper spelling to make our writing awesome!
In math we are learning to build, draw, and write two digit numbers. We are also learning to add and subtract ten from two digit numbers. We are practicing writing our numbers from 1 to 120. You can help your child by having them to write their numbers in order from 1- 120. You can also have them add and subtract numbers in their head at home. Students can use anything from food or other objects around the house to add or subtract. Flash cards are a great way to help build math fluency in addition and subtraction! The Dollar Tree has some cool Spiderman and Princess addition and subtraction cards.
Kinder Primer Grado:

Second Grade:
Second grade SUPERSTARS will be starting the 6th Unit of Study in Benchmark Reading called, “Tales to Live By.” We will be reading tales from around the world and discussing the lesson that each tale teaches us. We will compare and contrast characters and stories.
Math will be filled with measuring items of all shapes and sizes in inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters. We will also learn how to count money. You can help your child at home by just placing several coins on the table and letting him/her practice counting.
MATTER is the focus for science. We discuss the many shapes it comes in as well as the changes that can occur. Social Studies is filled with Geography and learning about different landscapes and places around the world. Your 2nd grader is half way through the year! Please continue to read daily with your child and have daily conversations to encourage growth and connections. We are thankful for all of your help at home and grateful for your partnership. Keep shining like a SUPERSTAR and shoot for the moon!
Third Grade
Happy New Year! The third grade teachers can’t believe that 2021 is in the rear mirror and we have rung in 2022!! There is a lot happening in third grade and we are excited to get moving on new concepts!
In reading, we will begin working on Unit 6 in Benchmark Universe. Students will be working on answering the question, “What helps us solve problems?” During this three week unit, students will be focusing on character development, explaining theme or the lesson learned, and using context clues to figure out unknown words. Students will also be writing a variety of genres each week such as narrative, expository, and opinion responses to prompts.
We have just completed our second i-Ready Math Diagnostic prior to break. Information regarding your child’s progress will be sent home soon. This month in math, students will be learning about geometry. Students will have to identify shapes according to certain attributes such as the number of sides, angles, side lengths, types of polygons, and kinds of quadrilaterals.
Coming up in Social Studies and Science, students will be learning about primary and secondary sources. Students will be learning about stars. We will tackle such things as how stars are different, the sun is the largest star to Earth, gravity, and radiant energy.
Please continue working on your child’s multiplication fact fluency and reading at home each night. Thanks for all you do for your child at home. Regular attendance is key to success! Thank you for your support.
¡Feliz año nuevo! ¡Los maestros de tercer grado no pueden creer que el 2021 esté en el espejo retrovisor y hemos llegado al 2022! ¡Están sucediendo muchas cosas en tercer grado y estamos emocionados de avanzar en nuevos conceptos!
En lectura, comenzaremos a trabajar en la Unidad 6 en Benchmark Universe. Los estudiantes trabajarán para responder la pregunta: "¿Qué nos ayuda a resolver problemas?" Durante esta unidad de tres semanas, los estudiantes se enfocarán en el desarrollo del carácter, explicarán el tema o la lección aprendida y usarán pistas de contexto para descubrir palabras desconocidas. Segundo Grado Tercer Grado
Las SUPERESTRELLAS de segundo grado comenzarán la sexta unidad de estudio en lectura de referencia llamada "Cuentos para vivir". Leeremos cuentos de todo el mundo y discutiremos la lección que nos enseña cada cuento. Compararemos y contrastaremos personajes e historias.
Las matemáticas están llenas de elementos de medición de todas las formas y tamaños en pulgadas, pies, yardas, centímetros y metros. También aprenderemos a contar dinero. Puede ayudar a su hijo en casa colocando varias monedas en la mesa y dejándolo practicar a contar.

Fourth Grade
Can you believe we’re already in the 3rd Quarter of 4th grade? WOW! Time is flying by and our 4th grade Stingrays are chugging along and working harder than ever to meet the expectation of the Florida State Standards.
Our next unit in English and Language Arts builds upon skills and concepts previously taught. Students are reading a variety of texts, both informational and literary, that present common issues. Then, they are asked to take a position and defend their position (both orally and in writing), using evidence from the multiple texts. In writing, students are working on writing narrative and Informative essays, using evidence from multiple sources as to support their central idea. It is challenging work, but they are making wonderful progress. Ask your child about some of the topics they’ve been learning and writing about this year. Their growth in 4th grade as aspiring authors has been amazing!
Our mathematicians are finishing up with the concepts of division and measurement and moving into the fascinating world of….FRACTIONS! Students will be learning how to compare, order, add and subtract fractions. We will also be relating fractions to decimals to understand how they can be equivalent. You can help your child practice these skills at home in the kitchen. Have your child help you cook dinner and let him/her do the measuring. Ask your child to show you how to convert that decimal on the can of food in your pantry into a fraction. Take it a step further and then have him/her write equivalent fractions.
Our scientists are learning about matter and its phases. Ask your child to explain the phases of matter, and how a chemical change is different from a physical change and give an example of each.
¿Puedes creer que ya estamos en el tercer trimestre de cuarto grado? ¡GUAU! El tiempo pasa volando y nuestras mantarrayas de cuarto grado están avanzando, trabajando más duro que nunca para cumplir con las expectativas de los Estándares del Estado de Florida.

Cuarto Grado
We are all excited to be back at school after our break! This quarter, we will be expanding our areas of study.
In Math, we will be revisiting fractions. We will be multiplying fractions and mixed numbers.
In English Language Arts, we will be working on theme and central message, analyzing “What compels us to survive?”. We will also read first-hand accounts, informational texts, and historical fiction while analyzing “How does conflict shape a society?”.
In Science, we will be examining properties of matter and forms of energy.
In Social Studies, we will discuss slavery in the colonies, mounting tensions in the colonies, and the Revolutionary War.
We’re learning what we need to know for 5th grade! 6th grade, here we come!
¡Todos estamos emocionados de volver a la escuela después de nuestras vacaciones! Este trimestre, estaremos ampliando nuestras áreas de estudio.

Math Updates!
Exciting work is taking place here at PSE in the subject of mathematics. Our stingrays are hard at work becoming mathematicians. To boost engagement in the classrooms, our teachers are utilizing AVID strategies to promote collaboration among students, increase oral language, and incorporate writing in the math block.

K-3er grado aprenden sobre los diferentes instrumentos de música.Clasificaremos y experimentaremos con instrumentos de viento, de madera, percusión, metales, y cuerdas.
4-5to Grado
4to y 5to grado están aprendiendo sobre los tambores circulares. Hablamos y experimentamos diferentes tipos de tambores circulares e identificamos los beneficios saludables de la música.
Prácticas del Coro empiezan el 10 de enero!

We’re enjoying recognizing students for Character Counts! in the cafeteria during lunchtime. Our Stingrays love to see their peers in pictures with their teachers on the big screen.
Dress for your Career Day is on Jan. 28th, so have fun talking to your child about what career they want to pursue when they grow up
PSE will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge in January so that our students can appreciate someone that has made a difference in their lives.
