Introduction

    • The seas cover more than two-thirds of the Earth and are essential for sustaining life, showing the scale and greatness of Allah’s creation.
    • Their vastness naturally humbles human beings and reminds them of their dependence on Allah rather than their own power.
    • In the Qur’an, the seas are presented as signs meant to be reflected upon, not merely admired.

Question: Can anyone guess how much of our oxygen comes from the seas?

4 of 19

Answer: The answer is about 50%, produced by microscopic organisms called phytoplankton. The oceans also absorb about 90% of excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions and around 30% of human-generated carbon dioxide, helping regulate Earth’s climate. (UN, 2025)

    • The seas function through highly intricate systems that operate in perfect harmony without human control or intervention.
    • The water cycle begins with evaporation from the seas, leading to cloud formation and rainfall that revives the land and sustains life - it support over 25% of marine biodiversity despite covering less than 0.1% of the ocean floor
    • Beneath the surface exists an astonishing variety of marine life, from coral reefs to large sea creatures, each fulfilling a specific role in maintaining balance.
    • The precision and continuity of these systems reflect Allah’s wisdom and perfect planning.

    • This verse calls believers to reflect on Allah’s greatness and authority over natural systems.

Question: Why do oceans not mix completely when two different seas meet?

7 of 19

Answer: Differences in salinity, temperature, and density create natural barriers, reflecting Allah’s perfect design.

Compare

…صُنْعَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَفْعَلُونَ

Ayah – Surah An-Naml (27:88):

    • Natural seas operate independently according to laws set by Allah, while human-made bodies of water require constant maintenance and supervision.
    • Palm Jumeirah in Dubai and Three Gorges Dam VS Allah’s Creation
    • Despite scientific advancement, humans cannot fully control tides, storms, or marine ecosystems.
    • This contrast highlights the imperfection of human creation compared to Allah’s flawless design.
    • Allah’s creation is perfected in every detail, demonstrating knowledge and precision beyond human capability.

Question: Can anyone name human-made water systems that try to replicate what the seas do?

10 of 19

Answer: Dams, reservoirs, artificial islands, canals. Correct. They are impressive, but imperfect.

Question

    • How do seas maintain balance and restraint despite their immense power and volume?
    • Their balance cannot be explained by chance alone but through the precise coordination of tides, gravity, and underwater terrain.
    • Allah has placed limits upon the seas, demonstrating His absolute power and control over creation.
    • Reflecting on this strengthens faith and reminds believers that the same authority controlling the seas governs all aspects of life.

Connect

    • The seas reflect Al-Khaliq as they are created with clear purpose, structure, and boundaries.
    • They demonstrate Al-Qadir, as Allah restrains their immense force despite constant movement.
    • The provision of food, livelihood, and travel through the seas reflects Ar-Rahman, Allah’s continuous mercy to humanity.
    • The hidden depths of the oceans reflect Al-Latif, as Allah is aware of what remains unseen to humans.
    • Calm waters and violent storms alike operate under Allah’s command and wisdom.

Ayah – Surah Yunus (10:22):

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُسَيِّرُكُمْ فِى ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ ۖ…

    • Allah enables travel through land and sea, reminding humanity that safety and success come only by His permission.

Appreciate

    • Gratitude for the seas is expressed through Dhikr, by remembering Allah when witnessing their beauty or benefiting from their resources.
    • Fikr involves reflecting on the balance, depth, and systems Allah placed within the oceans.
    • Shukr is shown through action, such as using marine resources responsibly and avoiding pollution.
    • Protecting the seas is part of humanity’s responsibility as stewards entrusted by Allah.

Ayah – Surah An-Nahl (16:18):

وَإِن تَعُدُّوا۟ نِعْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَآ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللهَ لَغَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ

    • Allah’s blessings are countless, and gratitude must go beyond words.
