This is Eric Carle: a famous children’s book author and illustrator.
He was born 1926.
He wrote his first children’s book at age 29.
He then went on to create over 70 children’s books!
His most famous book is called:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
This book is about a hungry caterpiller that eats many things all day long. He does this to get enough energy to become a beautiful butterfly.
The illustrations for his books were created as collages. Collages are pictures that are made by cutting shape out of paper and gluing those shapes to another piece of paper.
The painted paper that Eric Carle used for his collages had textures and marks on it. Can you see the texture on this blue hippo?
Eric like the way the texture of the paper looked in his collage. He thought that it added depth and interest.
Today we are going to create our own textured paper by doing crayon rubbings. This is when you put a piece of paper on a textured surface and lightly rub on top of the paper with a crayon.
Then we get to create our own butterfly collages out of the textured paper!
