People have had success finding houses in the circled area (also off of Cherry or JPA).

You can check apartments.com or similar websites.

Houses tend to be older (definitely tour before you

sign a lease) but are roomier and having a yard can

be nice

Avoid 100% undergrad apartments such as Grandmarc or Wertland Square–they are grimy and full of 19 year olds partying at all hours

.

It can be confusing to determine how “undergrad”

an apartment is so when in doubt check with an

upperclassman or someone who went to UVA

undergrad!

  • Pinn College has some unique housing considerations because they will be moving in January of their 2nd year (after 18 months) to Northern Virginia
    • Because housing in Charlottesville is very centered around the university it can be difficult to find leases near the university that end in the middle of the academic year
  • Pinn students usually do one of three things:
    • Link up with other Pinn students and sign an 18 month lease
    • Sign a regular 12 month lease and then:
      • Live in a sublet/short term lease during their M2 year
      • Sign an additional 12 month lease and sublet their room during spring of their M2 year
  • Private landlords and apartment complexes further from campus are more likely to give flexible leases!
  • Everyone figures it out! Please text Saja Ibrahim (703-870-0169) if you have any questions or specific concerns

Uncommon, but possible (more common for Pinn College)

It can be difficult to find parking around the medical school/hospital but buses drop off outside hospital

Daily class-goer:

Time: expect your commute to be 10-15 mins driving + 10 - 15 mins walking (if driving)

Cost: from free to $100/mo

Logistics: there are no parking spots available to med students at the hospital, so you’ll have to walk or bus from your parking lot to MedEd.

Required class only:

Time: variable, expect 10 - 15 mins driving + 5 - 25 mins walking/bussing

Cost: from free to $3/hr

Logistics: you’re most likely to pay hourly or try to find free parking on JPA

Feasibility of Commuting

20 of 22

  • Many required-only commuters use CVille and UVA buses
    • UVA Buses (Transloc app) link
    • Charlottesville buses link
  • Ask your classmates in Walker and surrounding places if they have an extra parking pass to give freely or cheaply rent to you.
  • The proportion of required classes varies significantly by block (ex: 80% in MSI to 20% in GI).

Feasibility of Commuting

21 of 22

  • Charlottesville Bus Routes
    • Monday through Saturday: 6 am to 10:30 pm
    • No Sunday service
  • All classes during the first and second year start at 8:10am to provide time for students riding the bus to get to class
  • There is an undergrad housing rush in early October. You may be pushed to renew early at the large apartment complexes (the Standard, Flats, Lark) claiming to offer the “best rates” of the year. Don’t let them pressure you to sign before you’re ready.
  • Most independently-owned apartments (Walker Square & Estes St) post availabilities much later (about 3 months in advance so March & onward) but have potential roommates lined up & be ready to tour. However, they might not stay on the market for long!
  • You can park by the medical education building for free on weekends
