Nuclear matter

Energy density of the infinite nuclear matter as function of the proton and neutron densities:

Binding energy per nucleon:

  1. make A, V, big but keep fixed
  2. switch off electromagnetic interaction (disregard Coulomb)

3) Impose isospin symmetry

DU reactions are much more efficient. If they occur the neutron star will be too cold!

The occurrence of DU reaction in NS depends on how fast the symmetry energy grows with the density

Conclusions

  • We demonstrated how the constraints on the nuclear matter pressure extracted from the particle flow in HICs can be combined with NS observations to constrain the nuclear symmetry energy
  • the symmetry energy remains positive at higher densities
  • strong evidence for Direct Urca opening in NSs and MDU>1.35 Msol
    • Independent of cooling data
  • New HIC data can significantly improve the results
