What former AP Lang students say about AP Lang...

2 of 11

Hello! I took AP Language and Composition in my senior year (2020-21) and this class greatly improved my writing skills, both outside and inside the classroom. The feedback I received from Mrs. Grande-Misaki was truly constructive and helpful in honing my abilities as a writer and reader. Not only did this class prepare me for the AP exam, but also the skills learned were of great use in writing college application essays. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to see a significant improvement in their writing and analysis techniques.

“I am so grateful that I took AP English Language & Composition in high school. During my senior year, I struggled with writing essays for college and scholarship applications, speaking during presentations and job interviews, and most of all, I had difficulty expressing myself and getting my message across. The skills I learned in AP Lang have alleviated these struggles and have continued to help me during my time in college. Besides providing me with college credit, which has allowed me to fill my schedule with more classes of interest, the writing and speaking skills taught in AP Lang were a great foundation for the coursework I'm receiving in my college courses.” Isabella G. I took AP Language and Composition in my junior year, and I was concerned that I would have a hard time because I wasn’t used to writing and analyzing non-fiction work. However, I quickly found myself enjoying reading non-fiction texts and identifying the different rhetorical devices that authors use in their writing. Even though virtual learning created a unique learning situation, Mrs. Grande-Misaki kept the class engaged with a variety of class activities and projects. She genuinely cared about her students and often asked for feedback on the different assignments she gave us. Her class provided me with the skills I needed to develop and create a personal style that gives my writing a voice and helps me effectively communicate my ideas. This is a great class that will push you to explore various writing techniques, teach you how to compose a solid argument, and provide you with the tools you need to be an analytical reader. To this day, I continue to use the skills I learned in this class and I believe they will help me find success in college.

“I think students should take AP Lang because it not only challenges you to become a better writer, but the learning environment is a fun one as well. We prep a lot in class for the AP exam which is extremely helpful. We also do quite a bit of writing, but we get feedback that will help us strengthen our writing skills. There’s not too much homework, although if there is, it’s mostly pretty interesting. Overall, it’s a very enjoyable class and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an AP language arts class. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the teacher is amazing and definitely one of my favorites! She is always willing to help you because she wants you to succeed in her class. Never be afraid to ask for help!”

“It’s helped me so much during college. What I learned in AP Lang, I learned during my college English class so it was basically a review and I could just relax the whole semester for that particular English class.”

“Students should take AP Lang because Mrs. Grande-Misaki is an awesome teacher! Besides that, I remember the class being multifaceted. We learned more than just English. I came across my favorite book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The interrelationship between science and English interested me, as well as English and other subjects. I still remember the different literary devices we learned and still employ them in my papers.”
