Job instability, wealth disparity, discrimination, inequality and other social issues persist both throughout the country as well as in our very own backyard of Jersey City.
In 2022, the residents of the Bergen-Lafayette community in Jersey City faced the highest unemployment rates in all of Hudson County. These residents were also 2x times more likely to experience unemployment than those in downtown Jersey City.
Many residents living in the Bergen/Lafayette Community consider themselves “the working poor,” with 27-29% of households classified as ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), meaning that although employed, they did not earn enough to support their families.
More than 2 in 5 households in Jersey City zip codes 07304, 07305, and 07306 earned a household income of $50,000 or less.

“It’s like they don’t want us to be here anymore… it looks like Jersey City is trying to cater to the affluent instead of the people who grew up here.”

The Solution

In the spring of 2023, leveraging connections across the advertising industry, our program organizers launched the “All Things Advertising” Field Trip - an immersive experience that provided our young men the chance to explore the advertising industry and learn about the various roles & responsibilities associated with entry-level positions and internships. They participated in real-world brainstorming and campaign development exercises, which left them educated and feeling inspired to pursue this sort of work in their own academic and professional journeys.
Throughout the day, the students were amazed by the activities they participated in. They were ecstatic about the marketing collaboration challenge at EssenceMediacom (and continued to debate about who should have won and why throughout the entire rest of the day). They thoroughly enjoyed networking and connecting with young professionals at Saatchi & Saatchi NY, where they learned “Nothing Is Impossible”. And the guidance and career coaching they received from mentors at TikTok was truly unmatched.
Our aim is to transform this initiative into an annual event - inspiring and empowering a new generation of future marketers and advertisers every spring.

In order to engage, inspire, and empower the next generation of marketers, Kismet of Kings is seeking two host organizations who are interested sharing their corner of the industry with our young men.
On a to-be-determined date this May, KoK will provide transportation for ~15-20 young men to visit your office for an 1.5 hr immersive, educational experience of your design. The visit itself is ultimately yours to plan, but some elements to consider are:
Videos, visual aids, and interactivity are highly encouraged. Swag is greatly appreciated, but not mandatory. But perhaps, most importantly, Representation Matters, thus we ask that our hosts/presenters represent a level of diversity.
Consent waivers will be provided by all our attendees, so photos & videos of the group are encouraged. On our end however, we strictly forbid any photography of your proprietary materials.

We thoroughly understand and appreciate the time, effort, and commitment required for our hosts to pause their daily responsibilities and graciously share their space and attention with our young men.
The first step is to message jason@kismetofkings.org to schedule a 30 minute video conference call with our KoK leads, where we will share the logistics and our vision for the day as well as answer any and all questions that you may have.
From there, we’ll lock in a May date that is convenient for both of our hosts: one org will host an AM session, the other will take the PM session.
Over the course of the following weeks, we’ll ask that you flesh out and share your proposed agenda for the 1.5 hour visit.
Please note that Kismet of Kings will be responsible for guardian permission slips, transportation, event insurance, etc.
