  • The Farm Bill is the largest food and agriculture bill debated in Congress
  • An omnibus bill that authorizes most federal policies governing food and agriculture programs including…
    • Nutrition assistance, crop insurance, credit access, conservation and environmental stewardship and much, much more!
  • 12 titles - broad categories that each include different programs.
  • Congress reauthorizes/updates the Farm Bill about once every five years.

In 2024 the Congressional Research Service estimated that the Farm Bill proposals would cost $662 billion over 5 years.

Milk from Family Dairies Act (Proposal)

  • Dairy farmers are forced to scale up to succeed in the current market - since 1997, the US has lost more than 70% of its dairy farms.
  • Uses price floors and supply management to balance supply and demand and to provide farmers a fair, stable price
  • Benefits in price stabilization also support customers

Farmland for Farmers Act (S. 2583)

  • Affordable access is the TOP challenge for young and beginning farmers, and especially farmers of color (National Young Farmers Coalition)
  • The amount of corporate owned farmland in the US has TRIPLED since 2009
  • The Farmland for Farmers Act stops corporations, domestic and foreign, from purchasing US farmland for speculative investment purposes
    • Improves tracking of who owns US farmland
    • Important exemptions for farmer-led cooperatives, LLCs, and other such entities

Fair Credit for Farmers Act (S. 2668, H.R.5296)

  • US farm debt is higher than ever before — stretching beyond $500 billion.
  • Improves access and accountability for the loan services offered by the Farm Service Agency

  • Shifts balance of power - FSA staff and the farmer should be joint partners seeking success!
