• Learn 3 – 6 new tips to try and use at home
• Become more familiar with your operating system

HISTORY OF MICROSOFT OPERATING SYSTEMS

• Windows 11 is the current operating system, it’s 2.5 years old
• Windows 10 expires October 14, 2025
• Windows 12 ???

May have AI functionality that will need new AI-hardware

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR VERSION – 4 WAYS

• Type winver in your search box beside the START (4 squares) – TO DO
• On a PC - Press the WinKey + Pause – to see the System panel – TO DO
• Type the word Settings in your Search box, Click System, About (Win 10/11) – TO DO
• Right Click the START button in left corner (Win 10) or Middle (Win 11), then System, scroll to bottom and click About

• Updated START button in Windows 11 – Centered
• Windows 10 – bottom left
• BOTH DO THE SAME – CLICK ON – TO DO

• Located at the bottom of the screen on your Desktop
• Comes with some icons but you can customize and PIN the ones you use
• Try to PIN an icon to your Task Bar – TO DO/SHOW

KEYBOARD SHORT CUTS – WINDOWS 10/11

• Windows Key – Flying Windows Key – what and where is it? To Do / Show
• Press the following Key combinations:
• WINKEY + S = Start Menu
• WINKEY + I = Settings
• WINKEY + Q = Search
• WINKEY + D = Desktop
• WINKEY + M = Minimize when you have many windows open
• WINKEY + E = Windows Explorer – Very important tip

OPENING A PROGRAM/APP

HOW TO CLOSE AN APP

• When you are finished with a program that you have open, or possibly multiple windows you have some choices
• CLICK X in Top Right corner of Window
• Right CLICK the open App at the bottom – CLOSE WINDOW
• Alt + F4

TASKBAR

• Located at the bottom of your screen – Windows 10/11
• Starts with START BUTTON, SEARCH, TASK VIEW
• File Explorer (yellow file folder), Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Store, Chat (Win11),
• The remainder are what you pin to the Taskbar

• Where is this ? BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER
• Very important to look here for any RED markers indicating your Virus scanning is out of date, etc
• Calendar – click on time/date – TO DO
• Shows if you are WI-FI connected
• Shows Hidden icons … Don’t hide them!

File Explorer

• Open your File Explorer
• Yellow Envelope on your TASK Bar or WINDOWS E or Right Click START, File Explorer
• RIGHT CLICK This PC, Select Open in New Window, Then DOUBLE CLICK to see the files within the C: Drive
• RIGHT CLICK a Folder and click Properties
• Doing this tells you how large the file or folder is, ie. 2.5 GB

• What is it - it is CLOUD STORAGE
• You get 5 GB free, 1T if you pay for Microsoft Office 365
• If for some reason you have opted to sync your files/pictures to Onedrive and you exceed the limit, you will get messages telling you and you either need to pay or stop syncing
• It’s a complicated topic so will not be covering

Creating Folders and Files

• Open your Documents Folder or Pictures in the Left column
• RIGHT CLICK an empty white area and select NEW, Folder
• Type in the Name of your Folder
• Lets type in Lessons VCC
• Now let's change the name by RIGHT CLICKING, Rename to
• Lessons VCC1
• This is how you create, rename folders, document names or pictures

Copying or Moving Files

• Open a folder containing a file you want to COPY
• We will COPY to our new folder LESSONS VCC1
• 2 ways to COPY
• Single click on file so it’s highlighted
• Right click with mouse if using one, chose COPY
• OR CTRL + C = COPY

Copying or Moving files

• To paste in folder, go to the folder you want
• RIGHT click, Paste
• CTRL + V = PASTE
• CTRL + X = CUT

Drag and Drop files

• I’m not covering as you need to be very precise and can lose files easily. Safer to Right Click, Copy

Deleting Files

• Once you delete it’s usually gone unless it goes to your Recycle Bin. Not everyone has one.
• Let’s check to see if you have one?

To Delete a file, picture, folder

• Select the file by single clicking so it is highlighted
• Press delete button on keyboard OR
• Right Click, Delete

Deleting Multiple Files

To select multiple files

• CTRL A = ALL

To select individual files

• Press CTRL button and then use mouse and LEFT click each file so it’s highlighted
• EITHER COPY OR DELETE

Folder Views

Open File Explorer

• Open a folder
• Right click in a BLANK WHITE SPACE
• CLICK VIEW or alternatively look at top Tool Bar and click VIEW
• Look at what is chosen - ie Large icons, small icons
• Try some of the different types - List, Details, Tiles, Content (Win 11)

Accessing attachments from phone: Some images are just logos. It is better to access attachments from a computer, where you have more screen space and control on which apps open which file types.
