Foreshadowing is where the author hints as to what might happen in the future.

“Grover- that snipping of the yarn. Does that means someone is going to die?” -Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Read Chapters 1-4, then find another example of foreshadowing and predict what it means:

Chiron represents “the mentor” in a traditional hero story. He is there to provide guidance for the main character, but does not reveal everything so that the hero can accomplish their goal on their own.
Chiron was a very Greek mentor for many demigods and heroes.
Some of Chiron’s students:
Theseus (you read about him and the Minotaur)

Choose 1 of Chiron’s students to read about and complete the table:

Every so often Mount Olympus moves to the new hub of human civilization. It started in Ancient Greece and has been in New York City for the past 500 years. Where should the next location be, and why?
Ch-ch-changes
29
How has Percy changed since arriving at Camp Half-Blood? What was the cause of the change? (Be sure to do a RACE paragraph)
New Characters
The Oracle
Did you know that oracles once really existed? They were like our modern psychics or fortune tellers. People would come from all over Europe to visit the most famous oracle, The Oracle of Delphi (in Greece). The oracles were called “ The Pythia” and also spoke in riddles or rhymes. The interpretation of these prophecies was difficult to understand.
What did the word “mule” mean in Ancient Greek slang? Would you be considered a mule? (I would!)
The Quest
32
What motivates Percy to accept this quest? How do his relationships with his mother and father play into his decision?
New Characters

On p202, Percy asks Annabeth if they could call a truce, and work together. Annabeth pointed out that even though Poseidon and Athena often argue, they worked together to create the chariot-Athena created it and Poseidon made horses out of wave crests.
Have you ever had to work with someone you’d rather not? Explain the situation and how you and the other person were able to call a truce.

After reading Chapter 16, you learn about a zebra, lion, and an antelope and their treatment. How did the author use dialogue to make you feel the emotion of anger or frustration?

Cerberus
45
Cerberus was a three-headed dog that guarded the entrance of the Underworld, allowing the dead to enter but letting none out. He was the son of Typhon and Echidna. Apart from his three heads, he also had a serpent's tail, a mane of snakes and the claws of a lion.
There are only a couple of myths in Greek mythology where a hero gets the better of Cerberus. The first is when Orpheus (Greek mythology), the famed musician, sneaks into Hades by lulling the usually unstoppable Cerberus to sleep with his beautiful music.
The second myth is when Hercules, with the approval of Hades, the god of the Underworld, gets Cerberus in a choke hold, knocks him out, and kidnaps him. He is eventually returned to his post where he remains to this day.
Watch the video of “Orpheus & Eurydice”. Aside from the defeat of Cerberus, what other comparisons can you make with “The Lightning Thief”?

The Defeat of Cerberus: Threshold Guardian to the Underworld
Orpheus wasn’t the only one to beat Cerberus with music...remember this threshold guardian from Harry Potter? As you watch this video do you notice any character similarities between the three characters in this story and our trio from “The Lightning Thief”?

In chapter 20, when Percy is about to battle Ares, Annabeth gives him the necklace: "Wear this, at least. For luck. "She took off her necklace, with her five years' worth of camp beads and the ring from her father, and tied it around my neck. "Reconciliation," she said. "Athena and Poseidon together." At this point, the necklace becomes a symbol of their bond of friendship. How has their relationship changed over the course of this shared quest?

After the hero has torn through the monsters, returned from the underworld, and the villain is exposed--there is nothing left but a few important questions. Who, why, and how? It’s time for the bad guy monologue. (The part where the villain confesses and basically reveals his/her WHOLE PLAN!)
Extras- Choose 1:
Make your own Camp-Half Blood Necklace, with a twist. (Choose 1-5 images from certain years in your life to depict on your beads)
Imagine YOU were a half-blood. Who would your godly parent be? What powers would you have? What would be your symbol or weapon? Create a trading card about yourself.
