Introduction to CNC Machining�

CNC Machining is often the last step in metal manufacturing, or sometimes the only process involved. Compared to other metalworking techniques, CNC machining is capable of meeting the tightest tolerances, and producing the most accurate, precise products over and over again.

PHRASES OF CNC

First, "machining," or the process of removing metal with the assistance of mechanical equipment, has been around for centuries. Machining processes include: turning, drilling, milling, shaping, broaching and grinding.
Next, "NC" stands for "Numerical Control." In traditional machining, a human operator must control the motion of a machine tool. Numerical control, first developed in the 1940s, governs the motion of machines automatically, through set instructions.
Finally, the "C" gets added. "Computer Numerical Control" designates a process by which an operator can write, adjust and implement instructions using a computer console. This addition, which took place in the 1950s, is what makes modern machining possible.

Numerical control is defined as the form of programmable automation in which numbers letters and symbols control the operation. This instruction is designed to do a particular job. NC machines has capability to change the program for each job ie when job changes the program instruction is also changed. It is easier to change the program instruction than to modify the production equipment. This flexibility reduces the overall production cost.

Difference Between NC and CNC Machine�

2.	It is defined as the machine which is controlled by the set of instructions in the form of numbers, letters and symbols. The set of instructions is called as program.	It is defined as the machine which is used to control the motions of the workpiece and tool with the help of prepared program in computer. The program is written in alphanumeric data.
3.	In NC machine the programs are fed into the punch cards.	In CNC machines the programs are fed directly into the computer by a small keyboard similar to our traditional keyboard.
