2024 Daylily Awards

American Hemerocallis Society

2 of 56

About this slideshow presentation

I created this presentation for my own use so that I could get a visual sense of which cultivars AHS garden judges are finding appealing in 2024. I decided to create it using Google Slides so that I could share it, and so that it can be universally viewed, even if you don’t have a Google profile. Then I decided to share it on the daylily Robin. Anyone with the link can view, so feel free to share it with non-Robiners if you want.

Underline text is an active link.

I copied Award info directly from the AHS Awards webpage, and from the Spreadsheet of 2024 Winners. Please email me with corrections if you see an error or have a comment or question.

Established in 1950, this award is the first official “stamp of approval” by the AHS, where good performance goes beyond the regional level.

To win, a cultivar must receive a minimum of fifteen votes to achieve the HM. These votes must come from no fewer than four different AHS regions with no more than ⅓ of votes from a single region. In voting for this award, Garden Judges must cast their votes only for cultivars observed in their own region. Cultivars are nominated for the Honorable Mention by their hybridizers. To be eligible it must have been registered for at least three calendar years. The Awards & Honors Committee may also nominate a maximum of ten cultivars each year that have been previously overlooked. Hybridizers may nominate a cultivar a maximum of three times, though not necessarily in consecutive years. After its third nomination, a cultivar cannot be nominated by the hybridizer.

Established in 1950, this award is given to signify that a cultivar is not only distinctive and beautiful, but also performs well over a wide geographic area. The Award of Merit is the second step in the “Pyramid of Awards” and is on the path to competing for the Stout Silver Medal. The award is made each year to the twelve registered daylilies receiving the most votes (13 in cases of a tie) by the garden judges under the following formula: A cultivar must receive votes from at least half of the regions, and not more than one-third of the total votes credited to a cultivar shall come from any one region. Cultivars must have previously been recognized by Honorable Mention.

The highest award a cultivar can receive is the Stout Silver Medal, given in honor of Dr. Arlow Burdette Stout, who is considered to be the father of modern daylily breeding in North America. This annual award–as voted by AHS Garden judges–can be given only to a cultivar that has first received the Award of Merit not less than two years previously.

Additional Slide Show Notes

Flower images - Where available, I borrowed images directly from hybridizers’ websites. If unavailable, I borrowed the image from the ‘Buy Now’ target website. I tried to check for copyright statements. If you own the image and prefer to not to have it represented here, please let me know and I will remove it.

Buy Now targets - I first tried to link to the hybridizer’s website for plant purchase. If the plant is no longer listed on the hybridizer’s website, there is no website, or in some cases the plant is ‘display only’; I then linked to another grower where I’ve purchased before and I know provides excellent service. If that wasn’t available, I then linked to a grower with the most reasonable price. If you’re the hybridizer and have re-listed a plant for purchase, please let me know and I will update the ‘Buy Now’ link. If you prefer not to have traffic directed to your website, please let me know and I will remove the link.
