What’s the point of PEARL?

There are many tools available for cooperative/collaborative work, s.a.:

  • Microsoft onedrive -- includes the full office suite
  • Google Workspaces (GW)-- includes the full google office suite

The Academy wants to support its members with collaboration tools.

  • Google provided a non-profit google workspace to the academy at no cost!
  • The tools in GW are easy to use for collaboration, access control, and are likely to persist and be supported for years
  • Documents are easily exported to other formats

How you know you have access…

Log in to your google drive�(a required capability).

You have access if you see PEARL as a “shared drive”�(double click)

Otherwise, let davidleasure@gmail.com know that you want access.

Everyone will have a folder with their name for collaborating and storing documents.

Who can mess around in my folder?

The default role of all members is “contributor”. As a contributor you can

  • contribute to anyone’s folder, edit files, comment, etc.
  • you cannot delete files
  • As a folder owner, your role is “content manager”
    • Manager has create, edit, delete, & sharing capabilities

Here’s the pull down menu for folder (choose share)

Your default role is “viewer”

You’re able to view others’ folders but not change anything.

You will be “content manager” of your own folder and can upgrade others’ permissions.

Question for the group: Should the default be “no permissions” instead?

Permissions would still be grantable by the owner of files or folders to which access is needed.

Insights - preparing drive folders by project owner name, is the most efficient - people get lost. All of us can be writing to our page. Can download to your folder to take a snapshot.

Metaphor -- this is a community, we have individual homes, we can invite people to our homes. We need a lobby and “resident” director -- could use a wiki. Having the name folder.

Need a tracking system. It’s useful to know where everyone is in the process. But it’s useful to help with the collaboration. (kanbanchi)

Beneficial for controlling who can view.

We definitely need to make the default “no access” to protect privacy of research subjects and anonymity of IJPE drafts for review.

Open question: What does it mean for your google space account? Are you using your space or PEARL’s?
