Comic Strips
Comics, although considered a modern form of art, have been around for centuries. The first comic strips is recorded to have been created around 110 AD-which is over 2,000 years ago!
However comics did not become accessible to all until the invention of the printing press in the 1400’s. Then in the 1800’s they were used as political tools. The artists that drew the comics would use them to make fun of their political opponites or draw attention to an important cause.
Finally in the 1920’s and 1930’s comics were created to be humorous. They were showcase in what was called the “Funnies” as part of magazines and newspapers. Eventually the comics became their own magazine and the “Comic Book” was born.
The two ways comics are presented in newspapers and magazines are either strips or single panel presentation. Here are some examples of single panel comics.
The multi-panel strips are usually displayed horizontally and made out of 3 to 6 smaller panels. Sometimes the artist keeps the comic in simple black and white or sometimes they color them in.
Today we will be creating our own comic. It can be a one panel, a multi panel or a even a full page story. It’s up to you.
