Joint Kinesiology and Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies study abroad program in Sweden and Denmark from June 2 to 14, 2026 during summer session.

This unique opportunity is co-led by Professors Diana Grant, Lauren Morimoto, and Bryan Burton.

This program is open to all majors and the general public.

Students will also have the opportunity to immerse in this cross-cultural academic experience by engaging with departments and individuals within and outside their academic major.

This 12-day in Sweden and Denmark Summer 2026 Program offers SSU students an immersive academic and cultural experience across Stockholm, Malmö, and Copenhagen.

The program blends classroom learning with field visits, including criminology lectures at Stockholm and Malmö Universities, a visit to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, and participation in the Stockholm Criminology Symposium. Students will also explore restorative justice, legal ethics, and social justice initiatives, such as immigrant women’s empowerment programs. Cultural highlights include guided city tours, the Vasa and Skansen Museums, Malmöhus Castle, an archipelago cruise, and a Copenhagen walking and boat tour.

With opportunities to experience Scandinavian food, sustainability, history, and community life, the program combines comparative criminology with cultural exploration, providing students with a transformative global learning.

WHAT DOES RESEARCH SUGGEST ABOUT STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS?

Research has shown that study abroad programs improve learning outcomes for all students who participate.

It has been found that such programs have an even greater positive impact on academic success for low-income students, first-generation college students, and underrepresented groups.

Students will remember these experiences for a lifetime.

Some of my study abroad students have gone on to study internationally for a semester or two.

Research shows that study abroad highlights adaptability, cross-cultural competence, and problem-solving—skills valued by employers—and may even provide early career wage benefits.

SSU Tuition and Fees: $1,630
ISP Program Fee: $3,800 (for 12 students)
Estimated flight: $900

Additional meals and personal expenses: $200

HOW DO I GO?

You will need a passport to travel!

You need a new passport if your current one expires soon. Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.

HOW DO I GET HELP FINANCING THIS PROGRAM?

Some tips for getting started:

Start early and apply to everything that may be eligible for you.
Start locally (Often many campus based scholarships have the fewest number of applicants.)
Visit the Writing Center (First floor Schultz Library) to work on your essay for many different scholarship applications.
Ask your teachers about any scholarships they may know about in your field of study.
Do not FORGET about your community: clubs, churches, volunteer organizations may be willing to sponsor you.
