SCITUATE HIGH SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION PROCESS 2020-2021

WHO-WHAT-WHEN

2

All students currently in grades 8-11 will pick their courses through their PowerSchool portal

The portal will be open for a TWO week period to students-starting on Monday January 13th @ 3:00 PM.

Please make sure you read through your new digital Program of Studies and then log into PS and start picking your classes

why can i pick a class, but my friend cannot?

Many classes have either a prerequisite OR are only opened to students if a teacher recommends you for a class

.
For example:
Mary’s current English teacher recommends her for English 10 Honors
In PS, she will see all of the following classes as options:

.
-English 10 Honors
-English 10 Level One
-English 10 Level Two

3

LIKEWISE….

Henry’s current English teacher recommends him for English 10 Level One

In PS, he will see ONLY the following classes as options:
-English 10 Level One
-English 10 Level Two

The other grade 10 English classes will appear, but they will be grayed out and will not have a check box allowing Henry to select

4

UH OH...

5

If Mary wants to take Algebra 3 with Trigonometry BUT she failed Algebra 2, she cannot take the class.

Why? Because after checking her Program of Studies she realizes the prerequisite for this course is that she must have PASSED Algebra 2.

This makes Mary sad and realize she should have gone to Department Nights!

WHAT ABOUT ELECTIVES?

7

Electives should serve one and sometimes two purposes:

Pick electives that INTEREST you! Every subject offers electives, so there is something for every interest. Look in the Program of Studies and find classes that would be fun to take just because….!

Pick electives that are related to what you would like to study in college. Some majors require specific coursework that you can meet through your electives.

Academic Electives

Many of our pathway courses are listed in the math section of the program of studies, but they count as elective credit.
You will not find these courses in your math pick list in the portal, but rather in your elective pick list, so spend some time really looking through all of the courses being offered.

For example:
Computer Science Principles can be selected from the elective
pick list because you earn an elective credit (though it is in the math section of your Program of Studies)

8

Clubs!!

Clubs will continue to run period 8 & 9

Some clubs run both (Art)

Some students will have English or Math intervention during period 8 or 9

All seniors have senior project period 8
