THE INTERNET OF THINGS IS GROWING

  • IOT is an inter-connected system of anything that has an ON/OFF Switch.
    • Key component is connection and communication of data between devices.
  • Apple’s HomeKit and Amazon’s Dash Buttons
    • First step into using third-party devices, services and actions in the in an interconnected way. (Nest, Automatic, et.c)
  • Privacy becomes an issue (mass data archives to be breached and big brother data.)
    • Not a dominating service yet.
  • Old futuristic dreams are now a reality (coffee maker that orders more coffee when you run out, and brews when you wake up.
  • Data is constantly growing. (1.1 zettabytes by the end of 2016.)
    • Equal to 36,000 years of high resolution video content.

HOW DATA MAKES BETTER STORIES

  • Ancestry.com and document reading technology has allowed researchers to collect and analyze census data from the past century.
    • MAPPING CENSUS AND HOUSING RECORDS
      • Plotting points on the map tell you about demographic patterns to assist with urban planning
    • MAP FAMILY TREES
      • Show movements across the country over a period of time.
  • As more devices are connected to the Internet of Things, increased communication can allow journalists to rely on more quantitative information in each story.

IOT + STORYTELLING

  • OBJECTIVITY
  • More information and clear facts improve stories.
  • Imagine if we had a record of the exact heart rate, blood pressure, BAC level, glucose level of every single person on the earth at all times. The more data we can collect about people, the more accurate and interesting storytelling can be.

“Numbers have an important story to tell. They rely on you to give them a clear and convincing voice,” -Stephen Few, data visualization expert, said.

DATA + VIRTUAL REALITY

  • Andy Serkis maps data points for Gollum in Lord of the Rings.
  • Data points can theoretically be ported to VR spaces to create characters or animate actions.
