DAY PROGRAM: GROUP ACTIVITIES

  • Do you like to be with others in a group?
  • 5 to 6 individuals spending the day together
  • Hours are 9 am to 3 pm
  • What type of activities can we chose from? Here are a few choices.
    • Shopping and eating out
    • Volunteering to help others in the community
    • Community gardening
    • Cooking
    • Outdoor activities

COMMUNITY BASED SUPPORTS

  • Do you prefer a one to one personal assistant?
  • Personal assistant picks you up from home, work, pick your location
  • At the Arc of Hunterdon, you interview and hire your assistant
  • You pick the hours you want to go out into the community
  • What can you do out in the community? It is up you.

COMMUNITY BASED SUPPORTS: DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES FOR EVERYONE

JOHN’S DAY

  • John got picked up from his house at 8 am
  • John went to the gym to work out with his personal trainer
  • John volunteered at Meals on Wheels. He helps in the kitchen packaging food for seniors.
  • John meets up with his friends for lunch at Chick-fil-A
  • John plays basketball with his friends at the park
  • John went home at 2 pm.

  • Mary got picked up at 11 am. She likes to get up later.
  • Mary went to the library and volunteered. She shelved books and movies.
  • Mary met up with her friends for lunch.
  • Mary went to the movies with her friends.
  • Mary’s personal assistant dropped her off at Special Olympics Basketball at 5 pm.

  • On Monday and Wednesday, Jeff goes to the day program.
  • Jeff likes to volunteer with his friends.
  • Jeff likes to eat lunch at the park during the summer.
  • Jeff likes to go bowling with his group of friends after lunch.
  • Jeff went home at 3 pm.
  • On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jeff works with his personal assistant.
  • Jeff likes to get picked up at 10 am.
  • Jeff likes to volunteer at the animal shelter.
  • Jeff met a friend for lunch. They went to high school together.
  • Jeff went home at 4:30 pm.

EMPLOYMENT: WHAT DO I NEED FOR MY JOB?

  • Job coaches may help you pick a place to work.
  • They work with you, but you decide.
  • What are your interests?
  • What are your strengths? A job coach will start with “What are you good at? What do you like to do? What would you like to do?”
  • Job coach can help you with:
    • Interview
    • What to wear on the job
    • What are the rules on the job
    • Your role as a worker. What are my job duties?
    • Will help with problems and visit you at work

RECREATION: FUN TRIPS

  • You can join at 18 years of age
  • You look at the calendar of events and choose the activity that you like.
  • Events and trips are at night and on the weekend.
  • Where do they go?
    • Dinner and a movie
    • Museums
    • Concerts
    • Dances
    • Dude ranch for the weekend
    • Camping in upstate New York
    • Caribbean cruise for two weeks
