Outfitting a Mars Habitat: A 3D Print Challenge

Prepared by GENIUSES SIBU

3 of 32

This is my diary.......

4 of 32

Background:

  • I'm an astronaut who has newly arrived on the Red Planet. My habitat has been pre-constructed, but, other than three 3-D printers, it doesn’t have most of the things I need to live and work. My challenge is to design tools and other items to assist me on my one-year mission.

DAY 1 (2045/10/01)

  • I come out from my space lander.  I landed on somewhere near the North Pole of Mars. I come in to my rehabilitation base to check out my supply. Realizing that my food and water are enough for 6 months. After I had settled down, I go to rest. That is my first day on Mars.

Day 31 (2045/10/31):

  • After the rest, we find three 3D printer around us.  The three 3D printer can make strong but small metal objects, one that makes weaker but larger plastic objects, and one that makes very large concrete objects. We spend some months to learn to operate it.

Day 72(2045/12/11)

  • I had been building three greenhouse by using the one of the 3D printers to grow our food is enough to survive.

This is how the greenhouse looks like.

I would like to introduce about its details .

Semicircle outside

Diameter : 4m

Height : 4m

Thickness of the wall : 30cm

I made it by  concrete printer.

Semicircle inside

Diameter : 3.8m

Height : 3.8m

Thickness of the wall :  30cm

Space glass

I take the space glass

from the landing craft.

And install it on the top of the greenhouse.

So the plants inside can enjoy the light ray from sun .

In order to have a thermenal insulation effect , I made it look like this.

Little garden

Diameter : 2m

Thickness of the fence : 15cm

Height of the fence : 15cm

Thickness of the chassis : 5cm

I decided to mix Mars dirt with my feces for planting. I will use leftover potatoes from my landing craft for planting.

passage

This passage is to connect my landing craft with the greenhouse , so that the oxygen generated

from the greenhouse can pass through ,

and the carbon dioxide I exhale can pass through the greenhouse for exchange.

Day 73 (2045/12/12)

  • I also created a shovel. The shovel is can be separated and combined. So, I can change a new metal part of shovel immediately and easily .I decided to use it for planting.

This is how the shovel

looks like.

I made it by plastic and metal printer.

I would like to introduce about its details.

Height : 8cm    Width : 2cm  Length : 2cm

I deisgned  a little screw and a connector  ,  so i can assemble them together.

Let me show you.

Day 137 (2045/02/04)

Food was solved but water  had not . So, I wanted to go to the polar climate of Mars to get the water ice. Before this, I must to solve my shipping problem, I needed to create a wrench and repair the broken tire.

19 of 32

This is how the wrench looks like.

I made it by using metal printer. There are A and B sides , I also designed a little screw and connector at the middle of the mainstay, so i can assemble them together. (the reason of why it so long)

Length : 30cm  Width : 6cm

Day 167 (2045/03/06)

After I have done the spanner, I started to repair the tire and finished it. I finished the repair by using the wrench I made. In addition, I also did some optimizations.

Width : 40cm

Diameter : 50cm

Blank space

Diameter : 30cm

I made  a gear to fill the blank space.

The outer side of the tire is made by the concrete objects. The part in its center is missing.

This is the broken tire , I observed it.

Part 3

Part 4

Because of its big bulk(gear) , I made it four  times apart.

One of the part

Height : 3cm

Width : 15cm

Perimeter : 17.27cm

[(22/2 *3.14*2)/4]

Gear tooth

Length : 2.5cm

Height : 3cm

Width : 15cm

Finally ,  I used the metal printer to combine them become a full gear.

Gear tooth

The gear was made by metal,

I also leaves some space (1cm distance) because it might get

thermal expansion and contraction.

Day 170 (2046/03/19)

I noticed that water was not enough right now, I decided to make ice-chisel for get some water ice at polar climate of Mars.

I made Part 2 bigger , so  I can exert centrigual force when I cut ice.

 When the metal part of

ice-chisel or handle is damaged, I can change one of them easily and immediately , so the whole will not be wasted.

Day 173 (2046/4/01)

Everything was prepared, I also brought enough water and food for my survival. After filled up with fuel(from my space lander), I started to go to polar climate of Mars by my new rover.

  Day 1732046/4/01

After a day of long trekking, I arrived the polar climate of Mars. Then I started to collect water ice.

31 of 32

Day173

 (2046/4/01)

Finally, I had collect enough water ice. The amount of ice is enough for my water usage for the second half of the year in Mars. Then I put all the ice in trunk of my rover. After everything finished, I started the journey to the rehabilitation base.

Day 365 (2046/10/01)

Today is my last day in Mars because NASA will take me home. Finally, I can come back to Earth. I finished the lonely life.
