Always find the VERTICAL change first!

7 of 20

Slope is the vertical change divided by the horizontal change.

Always find the VERTICAL change first! Always follow the line left to right.

If the vertical change is drawn UPWARDS, the slope is positive (Up = positive).

The horizontal change will ALWAYS be positive IF you find the vertical change first.

If the vertical change is drawn DOWNWARDS, the slope is negative (Down = negative).

The horizontal change will ALWAYS be positive IF you find the vertical change first.

Slope measures the steepness of the line. It is the RATIO of the vertical change to the horizontal change.

8 of 20

How to find the slope of a line:

  1. Follow the line, left to right, to find the first 2 perfect intersections.
  2. MARK the 2 points you found.
  3. Connect the 2 points (left to right) with a right angle. Draw the vertical line first - ALWAYS!
