WHY should I learn calculus?

8 of 18

Calculus is the mathematics of WHY!

9 of 18

What sorts of things did you learn in your previous math classes?

  • Algebra tells you what’s happening. Calculus tells you why it’s happening.
  • Calculus helps us understand how things change—and why they change.
  • Want to know why a rocket curves, a virus spreads, or a profit peaks? That’s calculus.
  • When you need to explain how fast, how much, or how efficient—calculus gives the why behind the answer.

What sorts of things did you learn in your previous math classes?

  • Did you memorize equations?

  • Algebra is the mathematics of static relationships.
  • Calculus is the mathematics of CHANGE.

  • We live in a changing world, so we need calculus to model that change.
  • For example, how fast is a car going RIGHT NOW?
