Who was he?

He was a Confederate general during the Civil War. Also trained at U.S Military Academy at West Point. He served as major under General WInfield Scott in the Mexican American War. Later he was involved in politics and ran for mayor of New Orleans in 1858, but he was defeated. He returned to teach at West Point for a short period, then he began to serve for the Confederate Army after Louisiana seceded. He was one of the eight full generals of the Confederate Army. He open fired in Charleston, South Carolina bombing Fort Sumter. Later, he led the Confederate forces to victory in the Battle of Manassas. However he was forced to surrender in the battle of Shiloh. He successfully defended Charleston from Union attacks, and he was later sent West to lead forces against Grant and Sherman, but he was not successful. He surrendered to the Union in April 1865.
