Cezanne painted a lot of “Still Lifes” or scenes with objects sitting on a table like these pears on a plate and urns on a table cloth.

He strived to create a beautiful surface to the painting where the brushstrokes mattered as much as the subject.

You can get a sense of how Cezanne is trying to balance his painting using design and composition- or how all the lines and shapes fit together

Today we will be creating a balanced still life composition. We will use a combination of pattern and realistic elements like flowers or fruit.

This composition is Asymmetrical- the right and left sides are different, but the central focal point (vase) is in the middle.

This composition is Asymmetrical too, but the focal point (jug) is off to the side.
